Vlieland is a Island in the Dutch Wadden Sea and the furthest west of the province Fryslân belonging islands. It borders to the southwest Texel (North Holland) and in the east Terschelling. In the south the island borders on the Wadden Sea and in the north on the North Sea. The island is 36.16 km² and has the lowest population density in the Netherlands with 28 inhabitants / km².

background

The Lucia flood of 1287 separated Vlieland from the Frisian mainland. This was part of a process in which the Wadden Sea was formed. The northern part of the island of Texel, Eierland, used to belong to Vlieland. In the course of the following centuries the island eroded more and more on its west side. There used to be a second village on Vlieland: West-Vlieland or Westeynde. The village was abandoned in 1736 after several floods.

Until 1942, Vlieland and Terschelling belonged to the province of Noord-Holland. The German occupiers made both islands part of Friesland. This classification was retained after the liberation. The Posthuys in the western part of the island still reminds us that the post came to Vlieland via Texel at that time. By the way, Frisian is not spoken on Vlieland. The original dialect was that Vlielandswhich resembled North Holland dialects. His last spokeswoman died in 1993.

Tourism is the island's main source of income. On Vlieland there are 15 hotels and a few hundred holiday homes and rooms as well as two campsites. The total length of the beach is 26 km.

In 1647 it was converted into a cruciform church. The furnishings are special: a lot of the furniture is made from ship parts. In the pulpit, for example, a cabinet door is made from a shipwreck and the columns are made from ship masts.Open: May - September Wed 10 a.m. - 11.30 a.m.

For centuries the "Posthaus" was an important counter on the postal route from Amsterdam to Vlieland in 1677, where many merchant ships were anchored. Amsterdam merchants requested this postal route in order to send reports to and from their ships more quickly. The Vlieger Postillon resided in the Posthuys and had to drive 8 km through the Vliehors by horse and cart every day, regardless of the weather conditions. Today there is a restaurant in the old post office; it is a popular meeting point for cyclists and hikers.

activities

  • Into The Great Wide Open, ITGWO is a meeting on Vlieland. Music is at the center, but it is above all the context that makes the festival special. In the middle of nature, where the beach forms the border and not barriers, on one of the most beautiful Wadden Sea islands in the Netherlands. Surprising fringe programs, visual arts, films, children's activities and enough peace and space to enjoy everything to the full. This festival is for all lovers of alternative pop music who have a need for a mood, but also like to set the pace themselves and want to have a little more choice. Oysters from the mudflats, freshly caught sea bass, carefully prepared. An intimate festival feeling, that's "the great wide open".
  • The Vliehors is a sandy area in the west of Vlieland. With its 25 km² it is the largest sandy area in northwestern Europe. In summer it is dry here and the white sand extends to the horizon. In winter it can also be flooded by the sea. The sand plate is too deep for permanent vegetation, even young dunes are washed away again with the first flood. The sand plate remains an important flood refuge for seagulls, oystercatchers and curlews. Seals also like to visit the sand plate. Part of the Vliehors is military territory. The Air Force exercises here during the week. Then the Vliehors is blocked. The rescue house is in the middle of the Vliehors. Currently it is as Jutter Museum (Strandgutsammlermuseum) set up. .
