It borders in the west Ameland and in the east to the island of Rottummerplaat and the sand plate Belg. In the south the island borders on the Wadden Sea and in the north on the North Sea. The island is 40.79 km² (land mass).

background

Schiermonnikoog only became an island with the St. Lucia flood of 1287. A settlement on the island has only been on record since 1440. At that time it belonged to the Claercamp Cistercian monastery from Rinsumageest near Dokkum. Whose monks with their gray (fries. Ski) gave the island (frieze: each) Her name: Schiermonnikoog / fries Skiermûntseach is the island of the gray monks. The monks left the island during the Reformation in 1580 and never returned, but the name stuck. The island came to Friesland, which sold the island in 1638 due to financial problems. Schiermonnikoog remained in private ownership until 1945, most recently from 1893 in the possession of the German Count Hartwig Arthur von Bernstorff-Wehningen, who bought it for 200,000 guilders. During the Second World War, the island was occupied by the Germans. They built a radar post ("Schleidorf") northeast of the village and laid out a narrow-gauge railway. When the north of the Netherlands was liberated by Canadian troops in April 1945, a group of around 120 SS men fled to Schiermonnikoog. It was not until June 11 that the last 600 Germans were taken to Schiermonnikoog. At the end of 1945 the island was confiscated as hostile property by the Dutch state. Although the heir of the Count, who died in 1940, Bechtold Eugen von Bernstorff, got along well with the islanders, he could not prevent the island, like all other possessions, from being expropriated by Germans, Dutch Nazis and traitors.

In 1989 most of the island became the National park explained.
