Neckarsteinach is a small town on the southernmost edge of Hesse. The much-visited "city of four castles" is located in Odenwald Neckar valley approx. 15 km east of Heidelberg.

Neckarsteinach is located on the right bank of the Neckar and is the southernmost place of Hesse. The towns of Darsberg, Grein and Neckarhausen belong to the city. Neighbors in Hessen are the place Hirschhorn (Neckar) as well as the community-free area Michelbuch, the neighboring towns Neckargemünd, Schönau and Schönbrunn (Baden) lie in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Neckarsteinach is on the Neckar Valley Railway. In the district Neckarhausen an 80-year-old car ferry connects the district with the Baden Neckarhäuserhof, a district of Neckargemünd. The ferry is one of only two existing ferry connections on the Neckar.

Tourist Attractions

The four castles of Neckarsteinach are lined up like a string of pearls. During the drive from Heidelberg to Neckarsteinach you can see them clearly from the road as they line up on the northern slope of the Neckar valley. Below the castles there are parking spaces for cars and buses, so that the two accessible castles can be easily visited.

In addition to the four castles, Neckarsteinach still has numerous old buildings to offer in its old town center. The following are to be mentioned:

  • The 5  town hall. Built in 1840.
  • The 6  Schönauer Hof. from the 15th and 16th centuries
  • The Church fountain next to the Protestant Church and opposite the Catholic Church
  • The 7  Protestant church. Built 1481 - 1483.
  • The 8  Catholic Church. Built in 1907.
  • 9  Remains of the medieval city wall. Built 1360-1370.
  • The 10  Bark scrub. 18th century
  • The 1  Restaurant Zum Ambtmann. built in 1587.
  • The former synagogue, built in 1888, immediately adjacent
  • The 11 Remains of the city wall from the 14th century
  • The 12 Eaves house(Half-timbered house)in the Bliggergasse from the 16th century.
  • 13 Sebastian's Chapel in the district Darsberg
  • The 14 Nibelungengarten was created in 2000, there are six sandstone sculptures in it, they stand for the Nibelungs Siegfried, Kriemhild, Hagen, King Gunther, Brunhild and Hun King Etzel.
  • The Neckarsteinach Art Trail goes from the Mittelburg to Schadeck Castle; its sculptures were created in 2004 by 6 artists.

  • Hike to the Dilsberg mountain fortress - There are cozy half-timbered streets in the Bergfeste. From the castle you have a wonderful view of the Neckar valley with the old town of Neckargemünd. The walkable fountain passage is also interesting. The gallery is accessible on guided tours.
From the landing stage in Neckarsteinach it is a 3 km walk to Dilsberg. The route runs over the barrage into the collision slope of the Neckar. Here it goes in turns (hiking trail with the red square) up the wooded slope. Warning: the path is not suitable for prams, as there are, among other things, there are stairs at the weir.
Hiking time: Approx. 3/4 hour to 1 hour walking time for the one-way route with an altitude difference of 200 meters.
Opening times castle: March 1st (in 2010 already from February 27th) to October 31st daily from 10 a.m. to dusk, in the winter half-year it is only open by appointment.

  • Hike on the Neckarsteig- The Neckarsteig leads through the city area
  • Neckargemünd outdoor swimming pool 4 km away, also easy to reach by bike on the car-free Neckar promenade.
  • Boules facility - There is a public facility for fans of boules (pétanque) on the Schiedweg. Balls can be borrowed from the restaurant "Zum Bootche".
  • Beer garden stronghold - Neckarsteinach is considered the beer garden stronghold in the region. From some gardens or terraces you have a beautiful view of the Neckar.
  • shipping - With the white fleet you can go on trips to Heidelberg several times a day. Twice a week the ships go up the Neckar valley towards Hirschhorn and Eberbach.
  • Four castles lighting - Every year, numerous visitors come to Neckarsteinach for the day of the guest with traditional four-castle lighting. The event always takes place on the last Saturday in July. On the festival mile on Neckarlauer there are numerous catering options as well as live music on two stages.

  • 1  Campsite "Unterm Dilsberg. Across from Neckarsteinach. The place is quite quiet at the Neckarschleuse. The traffic noise is well shielded by the houses in Neckarsteinach. From Neckargemünd city center it is just under 4 km to the square. The campsite can be reached directly from Neckarsteinach on foot or by bike via the barrage (approx. 1.5 km). By car it is about 9 km to the square via Neckargemünd.
