Ulm is a city of Baden-Württemberg at the edge of the Bavaria in the southwest of the Germany.

To know

Around the city, there are many statues of sparrows (Spatzen). Spatzen is a nickname for the residents of Ulm and a symbol of the city. Legend has it that, while building the cathedral, the workers couldn't figure out how to get the long wooden beams into the church until they noticed a sparrow entering its nest while holding a piece of straw long, rather than sideways.

Geographical notes

Ulm is located on the river Danube and is surrounded by forests and hills that rise to an altitude of over 620 meters, which are part of the Swabian mountains. Due to the Danube, Ulm sees a lot of dense fog especially in late autumn and early spring. Most of the city, including the old city, is located on the northwestern bank of the Danube. Across the river lies the sister city of Neu-Ulm the new Ulm, in the state of Bavaria.

Background

Founded around the year 850, it is steeped in history and traditions as a former Free Imperial City (German: Freie Reichsstadt). Today it is an economic center thanks to its various industries, and is home to a university. Internationally, Ulm is best known for having the church with the tallest bell tower in the world (161.53 meters), the Gothic of Ulm (German: Ulmer Münster) and as the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
