Tourist Attractions

Downtown:

  • Medieval city center with largely preserved city walls, many towers (e.g. Blaserturm, Mehlsack, Green Tower, Painted Tower, Katzenlieselesturm (Schellenberger Tower), Obertor, Untertor, Frauentor, etc.), beautifully renovated urban buildings (town hall, weighing house, leather house, Brotlaube, city library in the Kornhaus), town houses (in Marktstraße, Kirchstraße, Herrenstraße and around Marienplatz) and occasionally also half-timbered architecture (Vogthaus, Kleinkunstbühne Zehntscheuer, Salzstadel). The Blaserturm and Mehlsack towers can be climbed at an entrance fee.
  • Above the city, the Veitsburg (now a youth hostel) offers a fabulous view of the city. To the south of it stands the small church of St. Christina on the height above the Schussental. It is worth a visit, especially at Christmas time, as its (small) nativity scene is one of the oldest in Swabia. Also on the Veitsburg slope is the Burghaldentorkel, a medieval wine press in its own building with a wagon passage.
  • The three large Gothic churches in the city were built in a decidedly simple style. The most important pieces of equipment are the Gothic windows of the Church of Our Lady and the grave monuments in the community chapel of the Evangelical City Church.

Weißenau:

  • The former Premonstratensian monastery in Weißenau (today a psychiatric clinic) is about 2 km south of the city center and can be easily reached by bus. The gatehouse, the baroque monastery church with its ceiling frescoes, the choir stalls and the Holzhay organ and the early classical ballroom (which is only accessible during concerts) are worth seeing. The hospital grounds are the largest park in Ravensburg, and there is also a café there.
  • At the former main entrance to the site, a little east of today's entrance on Weingartshofer Strasse, it says Gray Buses Monument, which commemorates the victims of the National Socialist murders. The concrete memorial has the shape of a bus as it was used for transports to the killing centers. A second, similar bus sculpture is also part of the memorial and has been on the road in Germany for several years. It will be set up at changing locations that are related to "Aktion T4".

Museums

Four museums are in the immediate vicinity on Marktstrasse and Burgstrasse:

  • Museum Humpis Quarter. Cultural history museum on the city's history. The permanent exhibition refers to four residents of the houses in different centuries and assigns these exhibits to their time. We recommend the elaborately produced audio guides, which offer audio-play-like explanations for many of the exhibits. The main attraction of the museum is the building ensemble itself, which is considered the largest and best preserved late medieval residential area in southwest Germany. The houses were only secured by restoration and left in a condition that shows historical traces from many centuries. Modern additions are the glass roof in the inner courtyard and the building for temporary exhibitions.
  • Ravensburger Museum. With books and games from the history of the Ravensburger Verlag.
  • Ravensburg Economic Museum. With exhibits on the history of companies in the district.
  • Ravensburg Art Museum. With a collection of expressionists and works by the groups SPUR and CoBrA as well as temporary exhibitions of modern art. The museum opened in March 2013. The building is the first museum to be built as a passive house. The facade was clad with used bricks.

With the exception of the Ravensburger Museum, admission is free for children and young people under the age of 18.

The Oberschwabenschau takes place every year in October

Festivals

  • At the Carnival Monday (Rose Monday) there is a big fool's jump in the old town with numerous groups of the Swabian-Alemannic carnival from all over Upper Swabia.
  • On the Friday after Ascension Day (Blood friday) takes place every year Blood kick with over 3000 riders in the neighboring town of Weingarten. An impressive testimony to popular piety. The first part of the procession (through the city) is accompanied by numerous music bands and thus has the character of a festival. The second part (through the fields) has a quieter character and is characterized by the prayer of the rider groups.
  • Just before the start of the summer holidays, the Rod proof celebrated with parades and the active participation of drinking-loving schoolchildren in historical uniforms. The city celebrates itself and its history as a free imperial city. The pageant on Rod Monday attracts tens of thousands of visitors. On the days before, groups of drummers roam the city and the suburbs to meet friends and sponsors to drum up (to serenade). - Ravensburg is a little more upside down around the Rutenfest than many other cities at their respective home festival.
  • Ravensburg plays the first weekend in September

shop

The medieval flair of the city and the abundance of offers make Ravensburg a popular shopping city.

Every Saturday morning the weekly market with food from the region takes place in Marktstrasse and at the web market. When the weather is nice, the city is very busy on Saturday mornings and afternoons and it is difficult to get a seat outside of the many pubs, cafes and restaurants. The pubs and cafés are also very busy in the evening - at least from Thursday to Saturday.

The "Kaufland" supermarket in the south of the city and the "Real" supermarket on the northern border of the city (already on the outskirts of Weingarten) are open until 10 p.m. (closed on Sundays). The "Edeka" supermarket near the train station is open until 9 p.m. (closed on Sundays).

The city operates an indoor pool and the Flappachbad, an idyllic natural open-air pool (Flappachbad, Strietach 4, 88212 Ravensburg, phone 0751 61842)

Practical advice

trips

  • Vineyard, directly adjacent, with the St. Martin Basilica, one of the largest baroque churches in Germany
  • Ravensburger Spieleland, amusement park for children and families, about 9 km south in the Liebenau district of Meckenbeuren
  • Bad Schussenried with Schussenquelle, beer mug museum, museum village Kürnbach, village church Steinhausen and Zellersee
  • Bad Waldsee, about 20 km north, with the Hymer Museum (history of the caravan) and thermal baths
  • Bad Wurzach with the nature reserve Wurzacher Ried
  • Forest castle, about 12 km to the east, with a castle (museum) on one of the highest elevations in the area, in good weather great panoramic views of the Alps
  • Wolfegg, about 20 km to the east, with a Renaissance castle in an impressive location above the valley (unfortunately only visible from the outside), baroque church, farmhouse museum and automobile museum
  • Wangen in the Allgäu, about 20 km southeast, with a well-preserved medieval old town
  • Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, about 20 km south, with the Zeppelin Museum and the Dornier Museum. Travel time with the InterregioExpress (IRE): 16 minutes, with the Bodensee-Oberschwaben-Bahn: 21 minutes.
  • Lake Constance: All tourist destinations on lake (Birnau, Bregenz, Konstanz, Langenargen, Lindau, Mainau Island, Meersburg, Reichenau Monastery Island, Überlingen, Unteruhldingen Pile Dwelling Museum) and at the Upper Swabian Baroque Street are easily accessible as a day trip, at least by car.
  • For the harvest festival, some churches in the area are richly decorated, including those made from fruit Thanksgiving rugsthat show annually changing Christian motifs (biblical scenes, saints). Most of all they are known for this tradition mountain (west of Weingarten on the hill) and Otterswang (District of Bad Schussenried, the baroque church is worth seeing all year round, even without the Thanksgiving jewelry).
  • Tourism in Upper Swabia is traditionally based on the medieval imperial cities, the baroque churches and monasteries (Upper Swabian Baroque Street), some castles (Heiligenberg, Tettnang etc.) and the mud baths. But you shouldn't be fooled by this: As a traveler, you can also put together contrast programs that are free of church and baroque styles.
    • Art: museums in Biberach, Ravensburg, Friedrichshafen, Special exhibitions in many other places, e. B. Castle Achberg
    • History of technology: the Burghaldentorkel in Ravensburg, Zeppelin Museum and Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen, Hymer Museum (caravan) in Bad Waldsee, Automobile museum in Wolfegg, Lake Constance shipping, but also individual objects such as the bridges over the Bad and the Shot
    • Open-air and farmhouse museums: Bad Schussenried (District Kürnbach), Wolfegg, and in the neighboring Allgäu is also Illerbeuren still within reach of a day trip
    • From the Stone Age to the Alamanni:
      • Pile dwellings from the Neolithic and Bronze Age (UNESCO World Heritage), as such initially not to be visited, but museums are in Constancy (State Archaeological Museum), Unteruhldingen (Pile dwelling museum and village) and Bad Buchau (Federseemuseum, including one of the oldest wagon wheels in the world, and an archaeological educational trail)
      • Celts: Heuneburg, a princely seat on the hill above the Danube valley, partially reconstructed, with large burial mounds in the area and a museum in Dog singing
      • The visible traces of the Romans are mostly not very spectacular. At sea: Bregenz, Constancy, Arbon. - In the direction of the Danube: amounts-Ennetach (Castle of the Danube Limes and archaeological circular hiking trail, the museum opened in 2001 was closed again in 2015) and Cracks. - It gets more impressive in the Allgäu: Kempten (Cambodunum Archaeological Park, but the Roman Museum in the city center has been closed for years), Kellcoin.
      • Early and High Middle Ages: In Vineyard a large Alemannic burial ground was excavated (Alemannic Museum). In Kanzach (between Bad Buchau and Riedlingen) a wooden (!) castle was reconstructed 'out of nowhere', the Bachritterburg Kanzach (open-air museum).
