Upper Swabian Baroque Street - Oberschwäbische Barockstraße

The Upper Swabian Baroque Route is a holiday route in Upper Swabia. The starting and ending point is Ulm with its Ulm Minster. From there it goes south to Isny ​​im Allgäu.

After the devastation of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the princes and abbots initiated the reconstruction and redesign of churches, monasteries and public buildings in Upper Swabia from the middle of the 17th century.

Highlights of the east route

From Rot an der Rot, the east route branches off from the main route and then leads via Buxheim, Memmingen, Ottobeuren, Maria Steinbach, Legau and Leutkirch im Allgäu to Kißlegg and thus back onto the main route.

  • Buxheim (Swabia): Former monastery of the Carthusian monks. Visiting the former Reich Charterhouse is possible as part of a guided tour.
  • Memmingen: Especially important for the east route because of the former Kreuzherrnkloster with Wessobrunn stucco by Matthias Stiller and frescoes by Johann Friedrich Sichelbein. In addition, the medieval town center offers other sights.
  • Basilica in Ottobeuren: The most famous sight on the east route is the Ottobeurer basilica. The concerts in the basilica are a popular event.
  • City center of Leutkirch: Town hall with stucco by Johannes Schütz.

Highlights of the west route

The west route is off Riedlingen connected to the main route and then crosses in a north-south direction Bad Saulgau, Messkirch, Pfullendorf and Überlingen to Meersburg. From there you can either come over Friedrichshafen back on the main route or you can follow from there with the car ferry Constancy the south route.

South route
