Messkirch is a small town in Donaubergland, it is traversed by the Ablach, a right tributary of the Danube.
background
The first traces of settlement in the area around Meßkirch date from the Bronze Age. Meßkirch was first mentioned in a document in 965, the place received city rights in 1261. In 1361 the city came under the rule of the Counts of Zimmer, under whose direction the Meßkirch Castle was built; from 1716 it was the residence of the princes Fürstenberg-Messkirch. In 1806 Meßkirch came to the Grand Duchy of Baden.
The formerly independent communities Dietershofen, Heudorf, Langenhart, Menningen, Rengetsweiler, Ringgenbach and Rohrdorf were incorporated into the community reform around 1975, and some hamlets and farms also belong to the city.
