background

Sinking of the Danube

The Upper Danube Nature Park covers a large part of the Danube region and offers a number of sights. The most important is probably the Danube valley itself, more often than not lovingly Swabian Canyon The still young Danube has to cross the limestone mountains of the Swabian Alb on its way. This is clearly visible in the Danube breakthrough at Beuronwhere the river has dug deep into the limestone and created bizarre formations. However, the water has paved a second underground path. Around 200 days a year, the Danube seeps completely into the washed-out fissures of the limestone on the way between Immendingen and Fridingen, only to come back to the surface a few kilometers further in the Aachtopf and flow as the Radolfzeller Aach towards Lake Constance.

Not all residents of the Donaubergland like to hear it when they are called Swabians. Part of the region once belonged to Baden, another to Hohenzollern (the latter was an exclave of the State of Prussia until 1947).

getting there

By train

In Tuttlingen and Rottweil Intercity buses on the Stuttgart – Zurich line stop every two hours. You need 1½ hours from Stuttgart to Tuttlingen, from Zurich a little less. The Interregio-Express (IRE) also runs every two hours from Ulm – Sigmaringen – Tuttlingen – Donaueschingen – Neustadt (Black Forest), which also stops in Hausen im Tal, Beuron, Fridingen, Immendingen and Geisingen on the way. It takes 1:15 hours from Ulm to Sigmaringen, and a good two hours to Immendingen or Geisingen. In addition, there are IREs every two hours from Stuttgart to Sigmaringen (travel time almost 2 hours) and REs from Ulm to Sigmaringen every two hours (so that there is an hourly service between these cities in connection with the IRE).

By bicycle

The Danube cycle path. The Hohenzollern cycle path provides the connection from Lake Constance (Radolfzell) and from Rhine cycle route here. Both belong to the European long-distance cycle route EuroVelo 6 (Atlantic – Black Sea). On the Swabian Alb cycle path you can get from Nördlingen, Schwäbisch Gmünd or Bad Urach in one direction and Ludwigshafen am Bodensee in the other direction to Sigmaringen and Meßkirch at the eastern end of the Danube region.

On foot

The Main-Neckar-Rhein-Weg leads through Spaichingen on the way from the Stuttgart and Tübingen area towards the Black Forest.

mobility

Next to the under #Getting there mentioned IRE, which crosses the Donaubergland in a west-east direction, the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn (HZL) runs every hour between Rottweil and Immendingen, which stops in Spaichingen, Tuttlingen, Möhringen and smaller towns along the way. From the central bus station (ZOB) in Tuttlingen there is an hourly or half hour (depending on the time of day) bus route 50 to Mühlheim and Fridingen and bus 54 to Neustadt ob Eck.

On the Danube cycle path you can cross the Danubegland from west to east (Geisingen-Immendingen-Möhringen-Tuttlingen-Mühlheim-Fridingen-Beuron-Gutenstein-Inzigkofen-Sigmaringen, a total of 76 kilometers).

The total length of 66 kilometers Donauberglandweg - one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Germany - leads from Lemberg near Gosheim via Spaichingen, Mühlheim and Fridingen to Beuron. There the Donau-Zollernalb-Weg joins via Hausen im Tal to Sigmaringen (47 km).
