Rottweil is the oldest city in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

background

The district town of Rottweil is located on the Upper Neckar between the Middle Black Forest in the west and the Zollernalb in the East. The Rottweil district is part of the region Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg. Since the municipal reform between 1971 and 1975, Rottweil has also included 6 other districts as well as several farmsteads and residential areas.

Rottweil is the oldest city in Baden-Württemberg. It was founded by the Romans in 79 AD and had the name Arae Flaviae. Under the following Alemannic rule, however, the place lost its importance, only in 771 it is again known as Rotuvila mentioned. Then it was re-created in the time of the Hohenstaufen. In the late Middle Ages, the city belonged to the Swiss Confederation for a few years, until 1803 it was an imperial city, then it came to Württemberg.

Rottweil is best known for a colorful spectacle: the Rottweiler Fasnet. Annually on Shrove Monday the Fool's jump takes place, in which about 3000 fools take part, partly in traditionally defined figures, which changed little in appearance and meaning over time.

Another well-known of Rottweil are those rottweiler, a breed of dog that produces powerful and reliable animals and that was bred to be herding dogs and to accompany herds of cattle.
