Villingen-Schwenningen is a city in the region Black Forest Baar.

background

The town Villingen-Schwenningen was created in 1972 through the merger of the previously independent cities of Villingen and Schwenningen. In the course of the municipal reform, additional districts were added, so that the city includes 9 additional districts in addition to the two larger districts.

Villingen-Schwenningen is a remarkable twin town: not only does the historical border between the parts of Baden (Villingen) and Württemberg (Schwenningen) run between the two parts, but also the main European watershed. While the Brigach flows through Villingen, one of the two source rivers of the Danube, which flows into the Black Sea over 2800 km further south-east; The Neckar rises in Schwenningen, which flows into the Rhine, i.e. flows off towards the North Sea.

The cities also have a very different structural character: while Villingen has an old town with medieval city fortifications and other historical buildings, Schwenningen grew relatively late, which is why hardly any building is older than the 19th century (it was not granted city rights until 1907 - previously it was the "largest village" in Württemberg). Even if the Villingers consider themselves to be Baden, the city belonged to the Habsburg Front Austria for centuries and was not added to Baden until the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1806. Schwenningen is traditionally an important center of watchmaking and precision mechanics. Villingen and Schwenningen were amalgamated on January 1, 1972, after a referendum in both cities had given them wide approval.

Villingen has an important and special carnival tradition, at the center of which is the “Villinger Narro”. Schwenningen has national fame in the ice hockey sector, thanks to the Wild Wings team.
