Offenburg is the main center of Ortenau in Swimming and lies on the western edge of the middle Black Forest, at the exit of Kinzigtal and Renchtal.

The city of Offenburg has about 59,000 inhabitants and is located 20 km southeast of Strasbourg.

getting there

By plane

The Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) is 47 km away from Offenburg and can be reached by road in about 45 minutes. With public transport it is not less than two hours by train and bus via Baden-Baden.

The Strasbourg Airport (SXB) The nearest airport is 31 km away.

Other airports are the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL, MLH or EAP) (124 km away) and the airport Frankfurt, which can be reached with the ICE in around two hours.

By train

Offenburg is on the long-distance railway line Karlsruhe - Freiburg and is a stop for ICEs and ICs. REs and IREs run every half hour during the day in the direction of Karlsruhe and Freiburg and every hour Constancy via the beautiful Black Forest Railway. The Ortenau S-Bahn runs from the Black Forest (Freudenstadt via Wolfach / Hausach, Bad Griesbach via Oberkirch) and Strasbourg, usually every hour. The main train station is north of the city center, about 10 minutes' walk from the market square.

In the street

Offenburg is on the A5, the exits are "Offenburg" and "Appenweier". Freiburg can be reached via the A5 in about 50 minutes, Karlsruhe in about an hour and Baden-Baden in 30 minutes. Offenburg can be reached via the B33 through the Kinzig valley and via the B28 through the Renchtal. Strasbourg is 30 minutes away.

Ortenberg Castle
  • Ortenberg Castle - About 5km from Offenburg is at the entrance to Kinzigtal (Black Forest) the municipality of Ortenberg with 3000 inhabitants, over which the castle-like castle towers on a hill. The original castle from the 12th century was completely destroyed in the course of the Franco-Dutch war in 1678 and 1697. Reconstruction began in 1838 and was completed in 1843. The castle has been a youth hostel since 1950 and the tower complex can be viewed from April to October between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

  • On Saturdays and Tuesdays there is a big one along Steinstrasse and at the fish market Weekly market instead of. Many local specialties from the Black Forest and Ortenau are offered here.
  • Numerous well signposted Mountain bike tours can be made from Offenburg, for example, to the Moos (877m). As you climb through the vines of the wine villages of Durbach, Rammersweier, Zell-Weierbach, Fessenbach and Ortenberg, you have good views of the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest. If you are looking for a challenge, you can ski down the MTB World Cup route. From 2007 to 2011, the only World Cup races in Germany were held in Offenburg.
  • hike Tours lead to the Hohe Horn, the Brandeckkopf, the Staufenberg Castle or on the Ortenau Wine Trail to Gengenbach. A very demanding day hike leads to the Mooskopf.

One would not even trust a city of 60,000 people like Offenburg with the many shops. But Offenburg is the main center of the Ortenau and the only larger city in the area. Shopping in Offenburg is most fun on Saturday mornings, when you can combine shopping with a stroll through the market.

Gmeiner offers cakes, tarts and everything that can be made from chocolate at the highest level.
