background

Oppenau arose in the 12th century in the Lierbachtal near its mouth in the Rench. The place belonged to the bishopric of Strasbourg since the Middle Ages. However, the chronically numb Prince-Bishops Oppenau (and the Renchtal as a whole) had to pledge from time to time. Since the 14th century city, Oppenau had its importance as a relaxation and night quarters on the trade route Strasbourg-Ulm, which leaves the Renchtal here and over the Oppenauer Steige up to the Kniebispass - the climb was only approached with a good breakfast. After a devastating city fire in 1615, Oppenau was pledged to Württemberg at the time, the reconstruction was carried out according to the Swabian model with the gable ends of the houses facing the street, which means that Oppenau still differs from other places in the Black Forest in terms of townscape. In 1803 Oppenau came to the Grand Duchy of Baden together with the entire Renchtal.

In 1974 four other places were incorporated into Ibach, Lierbach, Maisach and Ramsbach. Oppenau thus became one of the most densely forested communities in Baden-Württemberg. The city lives mainly from medium-sized businesses in the timber industry, metal processing, vehicle construction, distilleries and tourism.
