background

The place emerged as a rural settlement in the vicinity of a Benedictine monastery. In 1360 Gengenbach became a free imperial city, and in 1803 Baden became part of it. The city is located in the Kinzig valley, and since 1971 the formerly independent communities of Bermersbach, Reichenbach and Schwaibach as well as several hamlets and farms have belonged to it.

By plane

The nearest airports are in Strasbourg(FR), Baden-Baden or Basel(CH). Then Gengenbach is over Offenburg also easy to reach by train.

By train

Gengenbach is located on the Black Forest Railway, which runs from Offenburg to Villingen-Schwenningen and further after Constancy moves. The trains of the Kinzig Valley Railway, which comes from Offenburg and to, also stop in Gengenbach Freudenstadt moves. Offenburg is an ICE train station of the Deutsche Bahn and has a good connection to the train station of Strasbourg(FR)

By bus

From Offenburg you can reach Gengenbach with the bus lines 7134 (Offenburg - Berghaupten) and 7160 (Offenburg - Haslach). The bus stop town hall is located in the historic old town (only from Offenburg).

In the street

  • Round trip to Reichenbach. From Gengenbach it goes over the Wolfslache and Santis Claus to Reichenbach, crosses the valley floor and leads back to Gengenbach on the Ortenau Wine Trail.

  • Round trip through the Vordere Kinzig valley. From the market square in Gengenbach it goes over the Kinzigbrücke towards Berghaupten, then over Zunsweier and Elgersweier to Offenburg. From there it goes over Ortenberg and Ohlsbach back to Gengenbach.

  • Defense history museum. In the past, the tower served as a defense against the city to secure the Kinzig Bridge and to maintain commercial sovereignty. Today it is used as a museum by the Bürgergarde Association.

It served as the parish church of the city of Gengenbach until the Gengenbach Monastery was dissolved.
  • 12  Rafting and Transport Museum. The museum is located in a former railway keeper's house at the intersection of the three traffic routes Kinzig, Schwarzwaldbahn and Straße.
  • 13  St. Jakob on the Bergle. On this hilltop with a wide view of the Rhine plain was, and this is evident from many coin finds, a Roman place of worship. For a long time the chapel was a station of the great pilgrimages to Spain. The current building is from 1681.
