Ortenau - Ortenau

Ortenau

The Ortenau is a historical Gaulandschaft and lies between the Rhine and the heights of the central Black Forest in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Regions

Most of the region Ortenau lies in the Baden Rhine plain and borders in the west Alsace. In the east, the mountain ranges of the central Black Forest mark the border, from whose valleys the rivers Elz, Schutter, Kinzig, Rench and Acher flow to the Rhine from south to north.

getting there

Due to its location in the Rhine Valley, Ortenau is well developed. The A 5 Karlsruhe - Basel and the parallel federal highway 3 cross the region in a north-south direction, as does the Rhine Valley Railway with a long-distance stop in Offenburg and Lahr.

mobility

Tourist Attractions

Here in the Ortenau you will find what makes the typical Black Forest for many: there are the houses with the hipped roofs, there are the Black Forest costumes in the side valleys, even if only at festivals, it is the kirsch, the fruit, but there are also quarry ponds for gravel extraction in the Rhine plain, which are now often used for recreation.

activities

kitchen

Fresh ingredients from stables, forests, streams and fields, fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables, combined with the French influence, make the Ortenau one of the regions with a comprehensive upscale cuisine, so that the traveler tastes tasty in almost every deer, vine and linden tree Finds courts.

On the edges of the Black Forest, viticulture is widespread throughout Ortenau. Typical grapes are the Pinot Gris (local name Marginal lands), Riesling (Klingelberger), Pinot Noir, as rosé ("Weißherbst") or as red wine and Traminer.

climate

Like Breisgau or Markgräfler Land to the south, the Ortenau is one of the warmest regions in Germany (although the climate depends heavily on the altitude). In the Rhine Plain the winters are often frost-free and with little snow, spring sets in in March and sunny autumn can last well into November. Summers are often hot and sticky in the Rhine valley. With increasing altitude, the picture changes towards snowy winters and more rainy summers.
