Mahlberg is a small town in the Ortenau, it lies in the Rhine plain at the transition to the foothills of the Black Forest.

Mahlberg was mentioned for the first time in 1215, the town received city rights in 1235. At that time it was under the rule of the Lords of Geroldseck. Mahlberg came to Baden in the 15th century. In 1973 the formerly independent municipality of Orschweier was incorporated.

Neighboring communities are Schwanau, Kippenheim, Ettenheim and Kappel-Grafenhausen.
