background

Ettenheim town hall

Ettenheim received market rights in the 12th century, and in 1302/04 the town was granted city rights. The city flourished under the rule of the Archbishopric of Strasbourg, in 1401 the city fortifications were expanded, and in 1452 a hospital was built in the city. The Thirty Years War brought hardship and destruction: Ettenheim was burned down in 1637. In the period that followed, the city was gradually rebuilt in the Baroque style that was customary at the time, as can still be seen from numerous buildings in the old town. In 1789 the then Strasbourg bishop left Louis René Édouard de Rohan-Guéméné went into exile and lived in Ettenheim until his death in 1803, the city is also called Rohan city designated. In 1805 Ettenheim came to the Grand Duchy of Baden.

In the years 1971 to 1975 the formerly independent places Altdorf, Ettenheimmünster, Münchweier and Wallburg were incorporated.

Neighboring communities of Ettenheim are Ringsheim, Kappel-Grafenhausen, Mahlberg, Kippenheim and Seelbach, Schuttertal (all in the Ortenau district) and Herbolzheim (Breisgau).
