The city of Achern is located on the edge of the Black Forest near the Hornisgrinde, at the exit of the Achertal. During the community reform between 1971-75, 8 communities were incorporated, these are the districts of Fautenbach, Gamshurst, Großweier, Mösbach, Oberachern, Önsbach, Sasbachried and Wagshurst. Achern became a major district town and is the fourth largest city in the Ortenau district.

Neighboring places are Lichtenau and Ottersweier from the district of Rastatt as well Sasbach, Run, Sasbachwalden, Kappelrodeck, Renchen and Rheinau from the Ortenau district.
