Achern is a city in the Ortenau.

The city of Achern is located on the edge of the Black Forest near the Hornisgrinde, at the exit of the Achertal. During the community reform between 1971-75, 8 communities were incorporated, these are the districts of Fautenbach, Gamshurst, Großweier, Mösbach, Oberachern, Önsbach, Sasbachried and Wagshurst. Achern became a major district town and is the fourth largest city in the Ortenau district.
Neighboring places are Lichtenau and Ottersweier from the district of Rastatt as well Sasbach, Run, Sasbachwalden, Kappelrodeck, Renchen and Rheinau from the Ortenau district.

Achern is on the Rhine Valley Railway between Karlsruhe and Offenburg, regional trains stop here. The light rail line S4 of the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund has its end point here. From Achern the Achertalbahn of the SWEG goes to Ottenhöfen. The 1 Achern train station is about 1 km northwest of the city center.

- The 1 Illenau, former Baden sanatorium and nursing home, late classicist building by the architect Hans Voss.
- The 2 Brecht's house at Hauptstrasse 66. Stephan Berthold Brecht, the grandfather of the playwright and poet Bert Brecht, lived here.
