Practical advice

trips

  • Ravensburg with its medieval old town is immediately south of Weingarten and can be reached by city bus in a few minutes
  • Altdorfer Wald, the largest contiguous forest area in Upper Swabia; Fish ponds and small canals (Silent brook among others) testify to the land use of the Weingarten monastery in earlier times
  • Wolfegg (Renaissance castle in an impressive location above the valley, unfortunately only visible from the outside; baroque church, farmhouse museum) and Forest castle (Castle on one of the highest elevations in the area, in good weather great views with an alpine panorama)
  • Bad Wurzach with the nature reserve Wurzacher Ried
  • Bad Schussenried with a former monastery (church, library room), Schussenquelle, beer mug museum, museum village Kürnbach, village church Steinhausen and Zellersee
  • Friedrichshafen
  • Lake Constance: All tourist destinations on lake (Birnau, Bregenz, Konstanz, Langenargen, Lindau, Mainau Island, Meersburg, Reichenau Monastery Island, Überlingen, Unteruhldingen Pile Dwelling Museum) and at the Upper Swabian Baroque Street can be easily reached as a day trip, at least by car.
  • For the harvest festival, some churches in the area are richly decorated, including those made from fruit Thanksgiving rugsthat show annually changing Christian motifs (biblical scenes, saints). Most of all they are known for this tradition mountain (west of Weingarten on the hill) and Otterswang (District of Bad Schussenried, the baroque church is worth seeing all year round, even without the Thanksgiving jewelry).
  • Tourism in Upper Swabia is traditionally based on the medieval imperial cities, the baroque churches and monasteries (Upper Swabian Baroque Street), some castles (Heiligenberg, Tettnang etc.) and the mud baths. But you shouldn't be fooled by this: As a traveler, you can also put together contrast programs that are free of church and baroque styles.
    • Art: museums in Biberach, Ravensburg, Friedrichshafen, Special exhibitions in many other places, e. B. Castle Achberg
    • History of technology: the Burghaldentorkel in Ravensburg, Zeppelin Museum and Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen, Hymer Museum (caravan) in Bad Waldsee, Automobile museum in Wolfegg, Lake Constance shipping, but also individual objects such as the bridges over the Bad and the Shot
    • Open-air and farmhouse museums: Bad Schussenried (District Kürnbach), Wolfegg, and in the neighboring Allgäu is also Illerbeuren still within reach of a day trip
    • From the Stone Age to the Alamanni:
      • Pile dwellings from the Neolithic and Bronze Age (UNESCO World Heritage), as such initially not to be visited, but museums are in Constancy (State Archaeological Museum), Unteruhldingen (Pile dwelling museum and village) and Bad Buchau (Federseemuseum, including one of the oldest wagon wheels in the world, and an archaeological educational trail)
      • Celts: Heuneburg, a princely seat on the hill above the Danube valley, partially reconstructed, with large burial mounds in the area and a museum in Dog singing
      • The visible traces of the Romans are mostly not very spectacular. At sea: Bregenz, Constancy, Arbon. - In the direction of the Danube: amounts-Ennetach (Fort of the Danube Limes and archaeological circular hiking trail, the museum opened in 2001 was closed again in 2015) and Cracks. - It gets more impressive in the Allgäu: Kempten (Cambodunum Archaeological Park, but the Roman Museum in the city center has been closed for years), Kellcoin.
      • Early and High Middle Ages: A large Alemannic burial ground was excavated in Weingarten (Alemannic Museum). In Kanzach (between Bad Buchau and Riedlingen) a wooden (!) castle was reconstructed 'out of nowhere', the Bachritterburg Kanzach (open-air museum).
