Toulouse it's a city French, capital of the Occitania region.

To know

Toulouse is the fourth largest city in France after that Paris, Marseille is Lyon. It is known for its rugby, its aerospace industry and its violets, which are used here to make bonbons and liqueurs.

Geographical notes

It is a city in southwestern France, and the capital of Upper Garonne in the area Midi-Pyrenees. It is located just north of the Pyrenees on the Garonne River, halfway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

When to go

The best time to visit Toulouse is from April to September. Temperatures in this period range from 14 ° C in spring to 27 ° C in summer, presenting a mild and dry climate. The Midi-Pyrénées region is the region of France with the most hours of sunshine, with more than 2000 hours.

Background

It was the capital of the Volci Tectosagi. In 280 BC, some Tectosagi participated in the Celtic expedition to the Balkans. The Romans conquered it between 120 and 100 BC. giving it the name of Toulouse. It was the capital of the kingdom of the Visigoths in the fifth century (until the battle of Vouillé, in 507), later of the kingdom of Aquitaine and in the eighth century of the County of Toulouse. At the Battle of Toulouse, the Arab troops suffered their first defeat by the Duke of Aquitaine, Odo the Great, in 721, at the time of the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula and southern France.

A new conception of Christianity developed in this region of France, at odds with that of Rome. The followers of this new religion (the Cathars) were persecuted and condemned en masse. The final consequence of this religious war was the annexation of the entire County of Toulouse to the royal domains in 1271. This was the major step towards the construction of France as a unitary country.

In the 20th century, Toulouse was lucky enough not to be part of the World War II scenario. However, it gave refuge to numerous Spanish exiles and fugitives during the Spanish War, and, like the rest of France, also to several Italian anti-fascists, including Silvio Trentin, Giuseppe Dozza and Giacomo Ferrari. In October 1941 the representatives of the three main Italian anti-fascist parties signed the so-called Toulouse document which formed the embryo of the future National Liberation Committee.

In the early 1960s, numerous Algerian immigrants (pied-noirs, the black feet) made this city their new home, participating in the sharp increase in its population, which went from 269,000 inhabitants in 1954 to 380,000 in 1968.

Since the end of the 20th century, Toulouse has become an aviation and space flight center. More than 35,000 citizens of the city of 400,000 work in the civil aviation or space industry, and Airbus / EADS is the largest employer in the region.

Tongue

French is obviously the language most used by the inhabitants: it is understood by the entire population and is the only one used by the administrations.

The vernacular of much of southern France, Occitan is inseparable from Toulouse's identity. It is present in two dialectal forms (Languedoc is Gascon) which are explained by the geographical position of the city, on the borders of Languedoc and Gascony. If this language is no longer what predominates in everyday life, since 1970 there has been a symbolic resurgence of attachment to roots that includes a renewal of Occitan. This renewal is reflected in the development of bilingual signage (street names, road signs), the emergence of Occitan radio stations and the creation of schools providing education in Occitan.

We add that the inhabitants of the Midi-Pyrénées region interviewed on the official website as their name have been designated mainly as Occitans.

Expressions

Many Tolostan expressions, from Occitan, are found in the regional French of much of southern France.

  • A pitchoun, une pitchoune: a child. Emotional evocation
  • A rampaillou it's a small climb.
  • Une chocolatine it is a chocolate bread.
  • A few it is not a pocket, as in French, but a (shopping) bag.

How to orient yourself

The center of Toulouse is represented by the place Esquirol crossed by the rue de Metz which ends on the Pont-Neuf.

The Place Esquirol was the site of the forum in Roman times at the intersection of the Decumanus and the Cardo Maximus.

The Place du Capitol is located where in Roman times there was the main access gate on the northern side of the walls. Today it is the main square of Toulouse. The homonymous theater overlooks it.

St Cyprien is the neighborhood on the opposite bank.

Neighborhoods and places

Place Saint-Cyprien

The neighborhood of 1 Saint Cyprien it is very beautiful, popular and old of Toulouse (on the left bank). Taking a walk, drinking coffee on the terrace, especially in summer, is a must. These are also the gates of the city, historically: Saint Cyprien square with its fountain is surrounded by two arches, and overlooks the oldest bridge in the city, the Pont Neuf, which dominates the romantic lawn, you can also admire the quays of the Daurade . The nocturnal plays of the lights of Toulouse around the river axis are well developed. It is also in the Prairie des filtres which takes place the annual Rio Loco music festival.

A street in the Arnaud Bernard neighborhood

The district 2 Arnaud Bernard (named after a consul of the city) is the other popular place where the good atmosphere par excellence reigns, and where well-preserved buildings marry with sandwich bars and terraces. Oriental restaurants and smuggled cigarettes are insured. If you want something, it is also the right place.
3 Place Saint Pierre is the student soul of the Tolosana party. With a strong tendency to oval dependence, due to the three main bars whose rugby is the central theme. Guaranteed local atmosphere and sounds, especially since it is a geographically sensitive platform: the law school is a few meters away, the Garonne, Saint Cyprien, the rue des Blanchers with its inevitable restaurants and the rue Pargaminières which is the only street (very animated) in a straight line towards Capitole. For those who would like to go to Saint Pierre at night, don't forget that the evenings are very alcoholic. Which means that at the end of the evening, there are broken glass everywhere, some puddles of vomit but apart from these few inconveniences, you have to be careful not to get into trouble. That said, Saint Pierre is not a dangerous neighborhood, if you are careful, everything is fine and if you are a fan of football or rugby, you will have a good evening.

The Daurade

The Daurade pier is a pleasant place on sunny afternoons. It is a long bank along the Garonne between Esquirol and Saint Pierre overlooking the (famous) dome of La Grave. At night, it can happen that in late spring and early autumn, parties are improvised in these places. If you ever go alone, you will have no problem making friends for the evening (for the girls, beware of the boys anyway) but choose well as you may have a bad night. Music (if you are lucky you will find guitars, saxes and violins ...) alcohol, games, flame eaters. Be careful though, after a certain time (2 or 3 at night) be alert even if it cannot be said that it is dangerous to spend an evening.

If you get on the bus without a ticket the driver may call the controllers. Many checks take place at the station Jean Jaurès, the largest in the network as it is there that the two Toulouse metro lines intersect (TO is B). The controllers are very often accompanied by the police.

Avoid driving downtown as parking space is severely limited. At the terminus of the subway and tram there are numerous free parking spaces that allow easy access to the city center. Remember to keep your tickets to exit these parking lots.

Traffic conditions can be viewed on this site.

By bike

A Velotoulouse station

Fortunately, more and more cycle paths are being set up in the city, but in Toulouse it is difficult to leave your car. Know that the conduct of the Tolosans (with some exceptions) is not always courteous and the saturation of the streets does not help. It is not uncommon to find cars stationary or even parked on the cycle paths. It is not uncommon to find grumpy drivers ringing if you stand in front of them in narrow streets. Avoid pavements as much as possible because it is often dangerous to share such a small space with pedestrians, who are often not very attentive to bicycles.

That said, the bike is the best way to get around Toulouse, for free if you already have it or have it ready, faster than the car due to the saturation of the roads, faster than the subway and buses which are disturbed by traffic.

VélôToulouse

The bike rental program is managed by the city hall. First you need to register with your identity card and credit card on velo.toulouse.fr. A one day ticket is € 1.20 and a 7 day pass is € 5, longer rentals are available. You have unlimited travel, at no extra cost for the first 30 minutes, then the counter starts ticking.

What see

To facilitate the visit of the city you can use Tourisme pass a card that allows you to visit museums and monuments for free using all public transport for 24h for € 18, 48h for € 28 and 72h for € 35. The pass also allows discounts at the affiliated activities. Further information at the tourism website web page.

Center

Eglise des Jacobins

The historic center of Toulouse is located east of the Garonne River: it is compact and most of the places of interest can be easily explored on foot. It is bordered on the east and north by Bvd Lazare Carnot / Bvd de Strasbourg, and south of the cathedral, rue Metz is Pont Neuf. The docks will become a good walking spot, but since the beginning of 2018 they are undergoing renovations.

It is one of the most prestigious and well-known monuments in the city. It is a masterpiece of southern Gothic architecture and a wonderful example of a Dominican church divided into two naves, as were the first churches of the order; and for having maintained this characteristic it is considered a rarity. Its fame is due to the particularity of the vault, which towards the apse radiates all its ribs from a single central pillar, forming the characteristic palm tree effect. Alternative art scene

Toulouse is one of the most alternative French cities. It began in 1939 with an influx of Spanish Republicans who had lost the civil war and fled through the Pyrenees, and continued into the 1960s with an influx fromAlgeria. Their tradition continues with the students, the squatter and the artistic movements of the city.

Shopping
