Nice (Nice in French) is a city on the French Riviera in the area FrenchProvence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

To know

Major city of the Côte d'Azur, Nice boasts ancient origins, having been founded by Greek colonists who gave it the name of Niki (Victory).

The fortunes of Nice as a tourist center go back a few decades after it was handed over by the Kingdom of Italy to France in exchange for the help received by Napoleon III in the Second War of Independence. Nice was discovered by British nobles at the time of Queen Victoria who stayed there with her entourage in 1896. In order to satisfy the needs of the illustrious aristocrats, the city was soon covered with Belle Epoque-style hotels. Famous names of the artistic avant-garde followed, including the painter Henri Matisse.

When to go

Promenade des Anglais, Nice's famous promenade on the Baie des Anges

Most Nice hotels offer high season rates in the period May-September, during the Christmas, Carnival, Easter holidays and at sporting events such as the Monaco Grand Prix.

How to orient yourself

Promenade des Anglais is Nice's seafront on the Baie des Anges. It is overlooked by hotels and casinos. Suffering from car traffic congestion.

Avenue Jean-Médecin is the main road axis in the north-south direction. It starts on the side of the train station and ends at Place Masséna near the seafront. It constitutes a pedestrian area but is crossed by tram lines.

Neighborhoods

  • Old Nice (Vieux-Nice) - Sandwiched between the castle hill (hills du château) now no longer existing and the "quai des États-Unis", a stretch of seafront east of the famous Promenade des Anglais, Old Nice is the meeting place for night owls. Its narrow streets are lined with pubs and "boîtes de nuit" for all tastes. Here you will find the Opéra de Nice, the opera house run by the Nice municipality.
Its best-known artery is Cours Saleya, a street reserved for pedestrians where there is a picturesque flower market.
  • Cimiez - Extending on the hill north-east of the center, Cimiez is famous for the "Excelsior Régina Palacel" hotel which housed Queen Victoria and her court in 1896. The company that ran it was declared bankrupt in 1934 and the property was auctioned three years later. Its 400 rooms were merged into apartments sold to private individuals by the company that had won it.
