background

The old (medieval) town is on a hill west of the river, the new town with the train station is on the east bank.

Ventimiglia (French: Vintimille), sometimes referred to as XXmiglia, is a town in the province of Imperia and the Liguria region, northern Italy, on the Gulf of Genoa. The city is very close to the border with France at the mouth of the Roia River. The name of the city is derived from the distance to the then border with France: 20 miles (20,000 passes).

A lot of traffic flows through this city between southern France and northern Italy, e.g. important railway lines through southern France to Italy. The Tenda railway runs north, via the French town of Breil-sur-Roya to the Italian town of Cuneo.

The city dates back to Roman times or earlier. The remains of Roman baths and a theater have been found in the city. There are some well-preserved mosaics in the thermal complex. Ventimiglia attracts many tourists. Every week on Friday there is an important market by the sea.

By train

1 Stazione di Ventimiglia (Ventimiglia Train Station) can be reached by SNCF train from Nice via Monaco. The price for adults from Nice is € 6.40 for adults / € 4.80 for young people (12-25 years) (as of August 2010). For tickets you often need the amount in coins or an EC / Maestro debit card. Note that in Ventimiglia the ticket machines are often out of order; If you are traveling here for a day trip, you should buy return tickets in advance.

The "new" city center and the shoreline can be easily reached on foot from the train station in the south and the banks. The original / historic section is across the river to the west .... an easy walk too.

Tourist Attractions

Ventimiglia has a great medieval old town that is not intended for tourism but an interesting place where ordinary residents live. It also has a nice view of the beach at its highest point.

Elsewhere you can see the remains of a Roman theater (2nd century) and the traces of the old city walls. The ruins of the ancient Albintimilium are on the Nervia Plain, about 5 km east of the modern city.

The beaches of Ventimiglia are made entirely of large flat stones (gallets). Be sure to take bathing shoes with you.

shop

The "new town" has a good selection of shops selling quality products with some savings. You can find decent bakeries / patisseries everywhere, but for a better trade, be sure to be at least a few blocks from the train station.

The covered market opens every day except Sunday and offers seafood / meat, fresh vegetables, fruit and locally / regionally made sauces, jams / jellies and the like.

On Fridays the "big market" comes to life. Many blocks along the coast at Passeggiata Cavallotti in the new town, Falke sellers tend to have repetitive offers of often counterfeit goods .... clothes, purses, shoes, etc., at very "competitive" prices (after negotiations). Seasoned shoppers occasionally find genuine, unbranded bargains ... often made in Asia. Relatively few stalls have anything other than clothing, and most of them are on the pedestrian bridge over the river.

If you come by car on a Friday it can be very difficult to find parking.

Travelers coming from Ventimiglia on Fridays and entering France by car are often asked about forgeries by the police at the border; Trains stopping here in a westerly direction are even more rarely checked in a similar manner. If found, any fakes you have will be confiscated and you will likely receive a huge fine.

kitchen

The station contains an indoor buffet restaurant that is well known for its food and cost. For more demanding offers, we recommend the proximity to the coast in the "old town", e.g. Pasta & Basta, a very good pasta restaurant. Pre-registration is essential on Friday market days and recommended on other days. There are a few restaurants (e.g. La Sirena) and bars on the beach.
