getting there

By plane

There is one in Genoa international airport (GOA), he can be reached directly from German-speaking countries (with Lufthansa from Munich, seasonally also with Volotea from Vienna). The small airport of Albenga (ALL) currently has no scheduled services, only private jets land here.

By train

Fast long-distance trains of the Italian railways (Frecciabianca) drive six times a day from Rome via Florence and Pisa to La Spezia and Genoa. Once a day the route is also used by the high-speed train Frecciargento served.

From Milan there is an hourly IC or EC to Genoa (1½ hours), alternating (i.e. every two hours) it continues along the eastern Riviera via Rapallo and Chiavari to La Spezia (a good 3 hours from Milan) or on the western Riviera along via Savona, Imperia and San Remo to Ventimiglia (3:45 hours from Milan; partly further to Monte Carlo and Nice).

In the opposite direction, apart from the Nice – Genoa – Milan Eurocity, French TER (regional express) also run at least every hour from Cannes via Nice and Monte Carlo to Ventimiglia on the western Riviera.

Intercity and regional express trains run regularly from Turin (Regional Veloce) to Genoa.

From Switzerland you can get to Liguria cheaply via Milan. For example, it only takes 5½ hours to get from Zurich to Genoa with just one change (connection every two hours).

In the street

The A10 autostrada, which is nicknamed Autostrada dei Fiori ("Flower Motorway") from the French border at Ventimiglia (there it continues as the French A8) to Genoa, where it joins the A12 autostrada, which leads along the eastern Riviera via La Spezia to Livorno (and further towards Rome). In addition, the A7 leads directly from Milan to Genoa, the A26 from Lake Maggiore via Alessandria (Piedmont) to Genoa and the A6 from Turin to Savona.

If beautiful views are more important to you than high speed, you can use the entire Riviera along the SS 1 state road, which follows the course of the coast from Ventimiglia to Sestri Levante (then it turns inland, the Cinque Terre can only be reached via extremely curvy side roads ).

By boat

Major ferry ports in Liguria are Genoa, Savona and La Spezia. Connections exist from the Mediterranean islands Corsica (Bastia and Ile Rousse), Sardinia (Arbatax, Olbia and Porto Torres) and Sicily (Palermo). These routes are mostly used by returning tourists in summer, which is why there is much less traffic in winter.

Ferry connections Africa consist of, among other things Morocco (Tangier Med), Tunisia (Tunis),

From the Iberian Peninsula (Barcelona) there are connections from Barcelona to Savona and Genoa.

Savona is the home port of the Italian cruise line Costa Crociere, so many Mediterranean cruises start and end here. Furthermore, Genoa and La Spezia are frequented by cruises.

mobility

Regardless of whether you travel by train or by car, the drive along the Ligurian coast is an experience: the tunnel and sunlight alternate constantly, plus the shimmering sea on the side.

You need a car for excursions into the beautiful hinterland. Most of the major car rental companies, e.g. Budget, Hertz or Avis, have agencies in Italy. You can also book from home, e.g. at Holiday Autos (Tel. 01805-179191).

Those who stay on the coast are well advised to take the train. There is a railway line that runs directly along the Riviera. Regional trains run once an hour, stopping in every small town, from Ventimiglia to Savona, from Savona to Genoa, from Genoa to Sestri Levante and from Sestri Levante to La Spezia. Regional express, Intercity or Eurocity trains also run approximately every hour, which only stop at the larger stations and with which you can also cover longer distances (Ventimiglia – Genoa or Genoa – La Spezia). Train travel in Italy is quite cheap, for example you pay € 12 for the 150 km from Genoa to San Remo in the regional express, and € 7.10 for the 100 km from Genoa to La Spezia. • Wife (Pasta filled with beetroot; onions and parmesan)
  • Soviore (Rice cake)

Liguria is also for his Wines known: Sciacchetrà is a dry white wine produced in the Cinque Terre is produced. Other white wines are Pigato and Vermentino (of which one also has similar on Sardinia can find) who suffer somewhat from the salty sea climate in which the vines grow. This gives these wines a special, if not unique, taste. Red wines are also widespread, with the Rossese di Dolceacqua deserves special mention.
