Piedmont is in the northwest of Italy
Regions
The area of the Piedmont region in the north-west of Italy occupies almost the entire upper part of the catchment area of the River Po and is territorially divided into eight provinces (Novara, Biella, Alessandria, Vercelli, Turin, Cuneo, Asti and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola). Piedmont has been part of the since July 2006 Euroregion Alps-Mediterranean.
Geographically, the region can be easily divided into three landscape areas:
- The Alpine region:
- Aosta Valley, autonomous region in the northwest.
- The Valsesiathat leads from Monte Rosa to the Po plain.
- The Ossola Valley, which extends from the far north of the Piedmont region Domodossola until Lake Maggiore enough.
- The Susa Valley, an important artery from Italy to France (Fréjus tunnel).
- The Po Valley: with the regional capital Turin and their metropolitan area, as well as the provincial capitals Novara, Alessandria and Vercelli and their provinces of the same name.
- The Hilly south:
- The Montferrat (ital.: Monferrato), the hilly area between Turin and Alessandria is the wine-growing region of Piedmont. It is divided into four areas: Astigiano, the area around Asti, Basso Monferrato, north of Asti to the Po Valley, Alto Monferrato, south of Asti to the valley of the Bórmida (south of it begins the Langa Astigiana) and Monferrato Casalese in the north-east between Asti and Casale Monferrato.
- Langhe - landscape around Alba; Wine-growing area.

background
language
There are still many different dialects both in the alpine regions and in the countryside. You have to live with the fact that only a few of those over 30 can speak English. French, on the other hand, is more common. In the larger cities as well as in the winter sports strongholds, however, you will have fewer problems as a foreign speaker.
getting there
By plane
The 1 Caselle airport(IATA: TRN) in Turin is the most important airport in the region. It is served by scheduled flights from the important European transport hubs and from other Italian cities. Operators are both the major airlines and low-cost airlines.
The closest intercontinental air traffic hub is the Malpensa airport in Milan with direct motorway and train connections to Piedmont.
Another possibility is that Le Valdigi Airport in Cuneo; However, this is only served by a few planes and is not particularly well connected to the public transport network.
By train
- within Italy by high-speed train Frecciarossa or Italo from Naples via Rome and Milan to Turin (Rome – Turin in a good four hours; Milan – Turin in one hour) or Frecciarossa from Venice via Verona and Milan to Turin (Verona – Turin in 2:15 hours)
- of France from Lyon through the Fréjus tunnel
- of the Switzerland Via Domodossola (Simplon Tunnel): Eurocity from Basel and Bern or from Geneva and Lausanne via Brig to Domodossola and Stresa (further to Milan; Bern – Stresa a good two hours) or the two-hour regional express Bern – Spiez – Brig – Domodossola
- If you arrive via the Gotthard or Brenner, it is most likely in Milan or to change Verona (e.g. Zurich – Milan – Turin 4:45 hours; Munich – Verona – Turin approx. 9 hours)
In the street
- within Italy via the A 4 (Trieste–Venice–Milan – Turin), the A 21 (Piacenza–Turin) or the A 6 (Savona-Turin)
- from France through the Fréjus tunnel (from Lyon, Chambéry) or Mont Blanc tunnel (from Geneva), Ventimiglia or the Tendapass (coming from Nice, Monaco)
- from Switzerland over the Simplon (from the direction of Sion, Lausanne, Bern), through the Aosta Valley over the Great St. Bernhard (from the direction of Bern, Lausanne) or on the motorway through the Gotthard tunnel and past Milan (from the direction of Lugano, Lucerne, Zurich)
mobility
The bus and train network is quite well developed. However, public transport is often very irregular and is geared more towards workers and students. On Sunday there is often only a very thin timetable.
The condition of the roads varies greatly, the main connecting roads are well developed, but secondary roads are often in poor condition and narrow. Parking spaces are usually in short supply, especially in cities.
Tourist Attractions
Three groups of places in particular have recently attracted attention through their status as UNESCO World Heritage Sites:
- Residences of the Royal House of Savoy. Castles and other buildings in Turin and environment.
- Sacri Monti in Piedmont and Lombardy. Chapel complexes or places of pilgrimage, seven of the nine registered places are in Piedmont, two in Lombardy.
- Wine-growing regions in Piedmont. Langhe, Roero and Monferrato as a cultural landscape.
