The area of ​​the Piedmont region in the north-west of Italy occupies almost the entire upper part of the catchment area of ​​the River Po and is territorially divided into eight provinces (Novara, Biella, Alessandria, Vercelli, Turin, Cuneo, Asti and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola). Piedmont has been part of the since July 2006 Euroregion Alps-Mediterranean.

Geographically, the region can be easily divided into three landscape areas:
