mobility
Public transportation
Transport network
- Buses, trams and subways are operated by the TCL (Transport en commun lyonnais) operated. The network is very extensive and dense and supplies the city and the surrounding area. The bus routes connect both the suburbs and the city center with around 115 lines. Seven of them are Trolleybuseswhich gives Lyon a first place in this field in France.
The four subway lines are the fastest way to get around the city. They connect Lyon in every direction and also lead to the neighboring cities: Villeurbanne, Vénissieux, Caluire-et-Cuire. Most of the 38 stations are handicapped accessible and have access restrictions to protect against fraud.
The two funicular lines (Funicular) connect the Fourvière hill and the district Saint-Just with the quarter Saint-Jean in “Vieux Lyon”, the historic Renaissance quarter.
recommendations
Since the TCL network is extremely well developed and the traffic in Lyon, especially at rush hour, is extreme and very stressful for strangers, it is advisable to use public transport rather than car. Since the numerous traffic jams in the morning and in the evening also affect the buses, you should preferably use the tram (Tramway) and subway (metro) use. The TCL service ends at midnight and does not resume until five in the morning. The employees, especially the drivers, are very happy to strike, which can occasionally lead to the failure of entire metro or tram lines. However, the strike movements are announced four or five days in advance. Furthermore, on most bus routes it is compulsory to use the driver's door to get on. If you ignore this, you will likely be advised by staff dressed in neon vests to use the front entrance next time. This initiative is called Montée par l'avant and is marked in green letters on the buses of the lines to which it applies and exists for safety reasons. Detailed information on current prices and the route can be found on the German or and French TCL homepage.

By car
Traffic in Lyons is heavy; Parking spaces are rare; the traffic management complex; the direction signals are reduced to a minimum. It is therefore advisable to walk and use public transport or bike. Nevertheless, there are numerous in Lyon Rental car stations, and parking is available at the tram and underground terminus.
Good to know: The visitor who does this City center wants to drive off will be amazed that he cannot find a sign. You have to get the direction Presqu'île consequences.
Important road connections
Outer ring
Lyon is to the east and south by Boulevard Laurent-Bonnevay (also boulevard périphérique called) includes. In the north there is the Périphérique Nord (TEO) as a toll road, which connects the Vaise district in the 9th arrondissement with the Boulevard Laurent-Bonnevay to Villeurbanne.
Inner city traffic
The quays of the Saône and the Rhône are the two major axes of the north-south direction in Lyon, with each bank being designated as a one-way street.
In the east-west direction, the connection is limited due to the peninsular situation. The most important connection is the tunnel Croix-Rousseconnecting the quays of the Saône and the 9th arrondissement with the quays of the Rhône and the 6th arrondissement. However, the tunnel is regularly closed at night (9:30 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.) in order to meet safety requirements. In the east of the city, the Avenue Berthelot, the Boulevard des État-Unis and the cours Gambetta connect the peninsula with the east city.
Frequent traffic jams
The most frequent traffic jams occur on the Avenue Berthelot, the Cours Gambetta, on some quays of the Rhône and around the Pont Churchill. The Vaise district is often congested because of its small streets, the many traffic lights and the numerous construction sites; of these are above all those Grande rue de Vaise and the Rue de Bourgogne affected. Between 7 am and 9 am you should avoid the quays of the Saône between Caluire and the Pont Masaryk.
The Croix-Rousse district in the 4th arrondissement should be avoided in the morning (market day, except on Mondays), especially the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse; in November there is a big festival on the square of the same name (Vogue) instead of.
Park
Finding a parking space is arguably even more problematic in Lyon than in other French cities. This is especially true for the inner city and in the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 9th arrondissements, a little less in the 7th and 8th arrondissements in the east. In the Croix-Rousse district (1st and 4th arr.) It is almost impossible to find a seat.
There are some parking garages where the charges vary according to time and geographical location: The parking spaces on the peninsula (Terreaux, Saint-Antoine et Bellecour) are the most expensive and mostly occupied.
The PR system on the periphery allows you to park your car and switch to public transport. This is especially recommended for those who are not very familiar with Lyon.
By bicycle
Lyon has set up a number of cycle paths, especially on the banks of the Saône, and wants to expand this network of paths even further: by 2010 it should be 500 km in the urban area. It is not recommended to drive outside the marked trails.
Skaters are best to go to the park Tete-d'Or (6th arrondissement), which is closed to normal traffic. On certain occasions, however, streets are closed to traffic and are then accessible to skaters and cyclists.
The organization Vélo'v maintains a network of over 250 bike rental stations in the city of Lyon and the suburb of Villeurbanne. At each station you can purchase a subscription card with your credit card; the card is recommended for tourists Courte Durée, light blue, for a price of one euro and valid for one week. The first half hour is always free of charge, the second hour costs one euro, each additional hour costs two euros. Since the network of stations is very dense, you can change at any time before the free half hour is up and thus move about free of charge.

Work
security
