Old Town
The historic center of Montpellier is known as Écusson, with reference to its shield-shaped plant. It was once surrounded by mighty walls which were demolished by the will of Cardinal Richelieu. In their place are now a series of avenues with some isolated bastions.
During the nineteenth century the Écusson underwent a series of eviscerations following the example of what had happened shortly before Paris with the opening of the Grands Boulevards by the Baron Haussmann. In Montpellier these works remained unfinished. The stretch of the rue Foch remains between the triumphal arch of the Porte Perou and the square of the Prefecture plus its continuation, the rue de la Loge which flows into the most important square in the center, place de la Comédie, dominated by the monumental facade of the theater municipal.
