Air France offers transfer connections, for example from Frankfurt or Düsseldorf in around 3½ hours (on favorable days there and back from DUS for around € 200, from FRA € 250).

The nearest major airport is Lyon Saint-Exupéry AirportWebsite of this institutionLyon Saint-Exupéry Airport in the Wikipedia encyclopediaLyon Saint-Exupéry Airport in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryLyon Saint-Exupéry Airport (Q1547) in the Wikidata database(IATA: LYS), where you can fly directly from D / A / CH. The normal price is 63 €. However, if you commit to a certain train in good time, you often get savings of around € 30.

From Lyon, the journey with the regional express (TER; five times a day) takes around two and a half hours.

Coming from Germany you usually have to change trains in Paris (with a change of train station, e.g. from Cologne to Clermont-Ferrand from 7.45 hours), from Switzerland you can also travel via Dijon and Nevers (e.g. . Basel – Clermont-Ferrand in six hours).

By bus

Ouibus, the long-distance bus subsidiary of SNCF, offers buses three times a day from Paris (Bercy, La Défense or Orly) to Clermont-Ferrand. These take a good six to eight hours, the single trip costs € 15 (savings price € 9).

In the street

From the north the A 71 motorway leads from Paris and Orléans to Clermont-Ferrand, from the south the A 75 from Montpellier. In a west-east direction, the A 89 leads past Clermont-Ferrand, which leads here from Bordeaux or Lyon.

Coming from German-speaking countries, in order to avoid the risk of congestion in the greater Lyon area, it is worth considering leaving the A 6 at Chalon-sur-Saône and taking the motorway-like N 80, N 70 and N 79 (signposted: Montceau-les-Mines ) and the northern Auvergne.
