Bourg-en-Bresse is a french City in the department Ain, in the Burgundy.

background

It is the capital of the Ain department and the Bourg-en-Bresse arrondissement, as well as the administrative seat of three cantons.

The town was evidently settled by the Romans, as excavations have shown. However, the excavations do not allow any precise conclusions, it could also have been just a Roman manor. Bourg-en-Bresse received city rights in 1250. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Dukes of Savoy made the city the capital of the province of Bresse. In 1535, Bourg-en-Bresse was conquered and annexed by France. The city could be recaptured by Duke Philibert Emmanuel, and as a result he had the city fortified. This enabled them to withstand a six-month siege by the troops of Henry IV. However, in 1601 the city was finally ceded to France.
