background

At the beginning of 2015, the greater Lyon area was spun off from the Rhône department, which was established during the French Revolution Metropole de Lyon (also Grand Lyon called) - an administrative unit of its own kind, which fulfills both the functions of a department and a community association. However, both continue to share the license plate and the initial postcode digits '69'.

Wine

The Rhône is known for its wines. The department has three wine-growing regions:

  • Beaujolais - in the North. Known for the Beaujolais Nouveau, other wines are less known: Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Cote de Brouilly, Fleurie, Julienas, Morgon, Moulin à Vent, Régnié and Saint Amour.
  • Côtes du Rhône - there are two wines in the department: Côte Rôtie and Condrieu.
  • Coteaux du Lyonnais - Vineyards from the west of Lyon.

Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé! - Every year on the third Thursday of November, the new Beaujolais wine arrives in bars and restaurants across France and in selected locations around the world. This wine comes from the historic province and wine-growing region of Beaujolais north of Lyon, which includes parts of the northern Rhône and parts of the southern Saône-et-Loire. It is a young wine that should be drunk as soon as possible as it does not age very well.
