Rastatt lies between Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

background

Rastatt is located on the lower reaches of the Murg just before it flows into the Rhine. The place was first mentioned in the 11th century and was a relatively small village on the Upper Rhine for a long time. After the residence in Baden-Baden had burned down, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm had a new castle built in Rastatt instead of a hunting lodge that had just been built. Rastatt was promoted to town in 1700, and a few years later the baroque residence based on the model of the Versailles Palace was ready for occupancy.

After the city was inherited by the margraves of Baden-Durlach, it lost its residence, but was an important Baden garrison. Rastatt gained importance during the Baden Revolution in 1849. The federal fortress of Rastatt was besieged, but soon lost to the Prussian one Troops are handed over.

Since the municipal reform around 1975, Rastatt has also included another 5 districts, the city is the seat of the administrative district of Rastatt.
