Einsiedeln is a more Swiss Place in canton Schwyz.

background

Einsiedeln was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 935. The place itself grew in the course of time, especially as a result of the pilgrimage, which rose strongly in the 14th century. This still plays a role today, even if it was overtaken by sightseeing tourism. The tourist attraction is the baroque monastery complex, especially the abbey church, artistically lavishly decorated by the Asam brothers.

Einsiedeln played an important role in the formation of the Swiss Confederation in the 14th century. The march (border) dispute between the monastery and the Schwyzians triggered the battle of Morgarten, which began independence from the Habsburgs.

In the sixties and seventies of the last century Einsiedeln was also an important ski resort, especially for cross-country skiing. However, the lack of guaranteed snow today has largely brought this part of tourism to a standstill.
