The city of Gaggenau is one of the most important industrial locations in Central Baden. More than half of the urban area is forested, due to its location on the Murg and at the foot of the Northern Black Forest Gaggenau with its districts offers a high quality of living. In the course of the municipal reform in 1971, Gaggenau became a major district town, and since then the towns of Bad Rotenfels, Freiolsheim, Hörden, Michelbach, Moosbronn, Oberweier, Ottenau, Selbach and Sulzbach have belonged to Gaggenau as districts.

Neighboring municipalities are Malsch, Marxzell, Bad Herrenalb, Loffenau, Gernsbach, Baden-Baden, Kuppenheim, Bischweier and Muggensturm.
