Backnang is a city northeast of Stuttgart in Neckar basin in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Backnang is located in the Rems-Murr district in an eastern bay of the Neckar basin, it is surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Swabian-Franconian Forest with the Löwenstein Mountains, the Murrhardt Forest and the Welzheimer forest as well as the ridge in the south Berglen. It is traversed by the Murr.

Backnang was first mentioned in a document in 1067, had city rights by 1230 and became part of Württemberg around 1300. In the early modern era, tanners and weavers dominated the craft. With the industrialization of the early 19th century, the city continued to grow in size and importance, the city walls were torn down.

Backnang has been a major district town since 1956. Today, the districts of Steinbach, Heiningen, Maubach, Waldrems and Strümpfelbach and a few other residential areas still belong to Backnang.

The main artery is the B14heading south after Winnenden leads and from there is expanded like a motorway and over Waiblingen and Fellbach leads to Stuttgart. In a northerly direction the B14 to Sulzbach an der Murr and further over Mainhardt to Schwäbisch Hall.

The German half-timbered street leads through the place.
