The city was only called Hall until 1941, when it was given its current name. The residents continue to call the city just Hall.

Hall was first mentioned in the 11th century, has been a city since 1204 and became a free imperial city in 1280. The right to mint coins (the Brighter) and through the salt production Hall came to a certain prosperity. In 1802 Hall came to the Kingdom of Württemberg.
