Duderstadt is a city in the south Lower Saxony. Due to its well-preserved medieval old town, Duderstadt is also known as the "pearl" of theEichsfeldes designated.

background

Old town of Duderstadt
St. Cyriac's Basilica and Town Hall

Duderstadt with its medieval town center is the largest town in Subfield and was located in the immediate vicinity of the border during the division of Germany - the inner-German border at that time ran only 200 meters south of today's district of Gerblingerode. The border location and the separation from the eastern environs for more than 40 years meant that Duderstadt tended to slumber during this time. With the opening of the border, however, both the city and the surrounding area quickly grew back together with the eastern part of the Eichsfeld, which brought about a positive change for Duderstadt.

Large areas of the old town with more than 600 half-timbered houses were opened only a few years later, on the occasion of the state exhibition Nature in urban development 1994, fundamentally renovated, so that the city with its old building fabric and successful urban development additions from the last 20 years presents itself as an attractive travel destination. The city wall, which has been largely preserved, surrounds one of the most beautiful and best preserved half-timbered towns in Germany, whose Catholic roots and the Catholic customs that are still lived today are not least reflected in the Eichsfeld Cathedral, which shows the Basilica of St. Cyriakus, which, along with the three-tower town hall, St. Servatius and the Westerturm with its twisted top, is the city's landmark.

Together with the other half-timbered towns in southern Lower Saxony Einbeck, Hann. Münden, Northeim and Osterode the city of Duderstadt is considering applying for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Program in order to draw greater attention to the important half-timbered ensemble in the southern Lower Saxony region and to receive funding for further urgently needed renovation measures. The particular problem in Duderstadt that needs to be resolved is the half-timbered houses, which are often uncomfortable to live in despite their external attractiveness.

In 2007, the choice of the "Landmark in the Land of Ideas" contributed to more awareness of the previously rather sleepy border town. The trigger was the Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the Otto Bock Group, which has long since ceased to be limited to Duderstadt.

mobility

Map of Duderstadt

Duderstadts Old town can be easily explored on foot, the core of the old town between the town hall and St. Servatius is designed as a pedestrian zone. Most of the old town streets are accessible by car, but the narrow streets are not designed for through traffic. If you want to explore Duderstadt in detail on foot, it makes sense to park right on the outskirts of the old town and also discover some of the ramparts.

Parking spaces can be found sporadically in the outer streets of the old town (Christian-Blank-Straße, Kardinal-Kopp-Straße, also at the upper church), but the largest number of parking spaces is located on 2 Large car park within the ramparts, at the central bus station (Westerstieg).

Mobility for people with physical disabilities: Duderstadt has increasingly adapted to the needs of wheelchair users in recent years. Sidewalks have been lowered or - as in the central market street - have completely disappeared. The cobblestone paving, preserved for monument protection reasons, was largely leveled or designed to be moderate. The small gullies in Marktstrasse can become an obstacle, but there are always sufficiently wide passageways. The Duderstädter Guest Information offers more information for people with physical limitations, also with its concept of Wheelchair trips.

Churches and monasteries

  • 1  St. Cyriac's Basilica. The Basilica of St. Cyriakus, also called Propsteikirche or Upper Church, is one of the oldest buildings in the city, along with the town hall: construction began as early as 1250, but the church only got its final shape with the two towers after the great fire of 1852, from which the previously single north tower had also suffered. Only with the necessary renovation work - with a delay of 600 years - was the second tower completed, which was part of the original building design, so that today two spiers at a height of 65 m dominate this highest place in the old town. In the north tower there is still the watchman's room for the city guard, who could ring the alarm from the room in case of danger. The westwork of the Provost Church, also known as Eichsfeld Cathedral, with its impressive portal is early Gothic, the choir (built from 1394) is from the High Gothic phase, and the originally Romanesque central nave was finally replaced by a late Gothic one. On October 3, 2015, St. Cyriac was given the rank of one by papal decree Basilica minor raised.[1]
  • 2 St. Martin, Chapel of the St. Martini Hospital
  • 3  St. Servatius, Marktstrasse 6, 37115 Duderstadt. Tel.: 49(0) 55 27 25 81, Email: . The ev.-luherische Lower church, as it is called by the locals, was built from 1370 in the late Gothic style and completed in 1520. Today's interior design was designed in Art Nouveau style after the church was partially destroyed in the great city fire of 1915. The internationally known organ by the organ builder Jürgen Ahrend from 1977 also blends in harmoniously with this architectural style.
  • 4  Ursuline Monastery, Neutorstrasse 9, 37115 Duderstadt. Tel.: 49 55 27 91 450, Email: . The monastery of the Ursulines is located in a 300 year old half-timbered building and is still inhabited by an active convent, which offers both refreshments in the monastery and participation in services and hours of worship in the associated church, the Church of Our Lady.
  • 5 Church of Our Lady, freely accessible.

Buildings

Buildings in Duderstadt
Former city library

In the Old town with around 600 half-timbered houses there are of course some outstanding buildings. Overall, however, the entire old town within the city wall is more than worth seeing. If the restoration residue becomes visible in one or the other street, these buildings themselves have a certain charm even in their dilapidation - and the city as a whole ultimately easily compensates for the obvious development gaps. An extended stroll through the city is therefore recommended, where you can simply drift through streets and alleys. Those who like to proceed in a structured way can also refer to the Small travel guide through medieval Duderstadt (pdf) orientate.

  • 6  Duderstadt town hall, Marktstrasse 66. Duderstädter Rathaus in the encyclopedia WikipediaDuderstädter Rathaus in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsDuderstädter Rathaus (Q2132417) in the Wikidata database. The core building dates from 1302 and thus this town hall can be described as one of the oldest town halls in Germany. Architectural styles from four centuries are combined. With its three distinctive bay towers and the red-dominated half-timbered facade in the upper part, it is also one of the most beautiful town halls in Germany. A tour through the town hall shows the many different rooms that the town hall has already combined in itself in the course of its existence. You can visit the salt chamber, prison and torture chamber, among other things. On the 3rd floor of the town hall there is an exhibition on the history of the town and the history of the town hall. The middle of the three town hall towers is accessible, from here you have a very good view over the roofs of the half-timbered town.[2]
  • The three story former 7 library (Marktstraße 88) on the small lane from the St. Cyriakus Basilica to the Stadtpark was originally the town house of the Gerode Monastery, built in 1627, later called Bertramsches Haus and owned by the town since 1971. The building is currently empty. The city library was relocated to the old Duderstadt town hall.
  • The 8  West tower, Westertorstrasse. Westerturm in the encyclopedia WikipediaWesterturm in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsWesterturm (Q2565046) in the Wikidata database. With its twisted roof, about its origin various legends from Devil on the west tower exist. The tower, which is over 500 years old, is the last remnant of the medieval fortifications and is now part of a museum.
The roofers once struggled to cover the roof of the Westerturm - however they started it, it stayed crooked. This angered the mayor, who exclaimed: "The devil should get you if you don't do it properly!" The devil then appeared with a sulphurous stench and thunder and lightning and asked him what he would give him if he would cover the tower for him. 3 ducats and his soul, the angry mayor promised him. And the spire was actually covered the next morning. When the devil came and asked for his wages, the mayor refused him, because it would have been easy for the devil to cover the tower, he didn't earn so much. He gave him a ducat and chased him away. The devil went mad as hell and wanted to get to his neck and his soul. But the mayor was under the niche of St. Florian and thus also under his protection, so that the devil had to leave him. Furious, he soared up, took the tower by its top, and turned it around once. The people of Duderstadt can still see who covered the tower for them back then.
  • 9  Hessian house, Marktstrasse 84. 4-storey listed half-timbered house built in 1620 by Johannes Hesse in the Renaissance style. The figurative consoles that support the corner of the house in the entrance area are worth seeing.
  • 10  Krevethsturm, On the brast. The Krevethsturm was part of the former city fortifications and can be seen from the city park.

Fountain

Fountain
Fountain at the horse market
  • 14 Reunification fountain, created by Harl-Henning Seewald, since 1994 on Marktstrasse next to St. Servatius. The fountain consists of two sculptures, a male and a female, who approach each other with outspread arms, but there is a wide gap between them and the front of both people is flattened. The fountain should symbolize both the time of division - through the thickness of the gap, which looks like a wall - and the fall of the wall, as it is symbolically dissolved through the gap, through the free space between the people. The fountain is on the watercourse of the Brehme, which runs through the city center.
