Herzberg am Harz is a city on the western edge of the Resin in Lower Saxony.

background

Herzberg was formed below the castle of the same name, from which the lock emerged. It was mentioned as early as 1154, but the place itself was not mentioned until 1337. It can be assumed that settlement began much earlier. Traditional place names in the Middle Ages are Hircesberg, Hirzberch or Hertsberg. The basic word -berg indicates a time of origin in the high medieval expansion period between 800 and 1350; the part of the place name Herz- probably comes from the deer popular at the time when hunting. In terms of administration, the Herzberg Office existed since 1315, and in 1859 it was combined with the Scharzfels Office (from the castle of the same name). In 1598, Herzberg was referred to as a Flecken, and the town received town charter in 1929. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the town was known for its weapons production. During the Second World War, there was an explosives factory in Pfingstanger.

Tourist Attractions

City tour

In the following, a possible, wheelchair and stroller-friendly city tour is described in which the Sights of Herzberg (written in bold) can be visited. On with (P) marked spots can be parked free of charge.

Take the market square (P) as a possible starting point. The 11 old City Hall in the middle of the square not only looks like a fire station, it was one of those times until the fire brigade moved out in 1905. Even the distinctive tower for drying the hoses is still there. After it became too small as a town hall, the administration moved to the opposite one 12 new townhall (P). Incidentally, there is a small carillon in the courtyard at the registry office. The city archives and # Tourist information.

At the new town hall, an arm branches off from the so-called Mühlengraben. You follow it and after 50 meters you reach the entrance to the 13 Juessee. The lake, which is up to 28.5 m deep and has a total area of 6.88 hectares, was created by a sinkhole - not untypical for the Karst region - it is believed 8,000-14,000 years ago. Located in the middle of the city, it offers a beautiful and wheelchair-accessible circular route around it. → More information in Wikipedia

You can walk around the Juessee on both sides, mostly directly on the bank. After about 200 meters (a short walk past the skater area) or 1200 meters (long walk past the outdoor pool (P) and the “Seeschlößchen” (P)) you reach the outlet of the Juessee, which again feeds the Mühlengraben. From the mouth in the Mühlengraben the Johann-Andreas-Engelhardt-Weg directly to the evangelical one consecrated in 1845 14 Nicolaikirche. It contains an organ made by the important organ builder Johann Andreas Engelhardt. Opposite the church is the one consecrated in 1905 15 primary school Nicolai School (P).

From here you go Junkernstrasse (P), which runs between school and church. That is probably due to her, where Herzberg's roots are believed to be 16 oldest (half-timbered) house of the city from 1594.

At the end of Junkernstrasse lies the Roman Catholic Church that 17 Parish Church of St. Joseph (P). The building, made of Herzberger greywacke and red sandstone, was built between 1893 and 1895.

Below the church runs the Poststrasse (former Bundesstrasse 243) and the Osteroder Strasse (Today's four-lane B 243). After crossing this at the traffic lights with the Göttinger Strasse (former B 27), one looks at the 18 Ochsenpfuhl down. The (depending on the weather) about 12,000 m² lake is also located in a sinkhole and has no (above-ground) inflows and outflows. The silting bank zones are heavily overgrown. → More information in Wikipedia

If you go left at the traffic lights, a path leads down to the Ochsenpfuhl and (in summer) more or less “through” the lake. It ends below the "Schloßbahnhof". If you go left, along the embankment, you will soon reach the Schlossstrasse. However, the path at Ochsenpfuhl itself is not wheelchair accessible; Therefore, people with reduced mobility and strollers should turn in the other direction from the traffic lights and use the Göttinger Strasse (P) and the road Ochsenpfuhl to Schlossstrasse (P) go. Both ways come out opposite the former vocational school. One crosses on the Schlossstrasse the railway line and lands at the "Freudenstein". From here there are two options: Directly on the Pastors Way Up the Schloßberg, after 200 meters you reach the gatehouse of the castle (see below). But you can also take the street At the vineyard (P) and then walk up the street to the castle; this route is 600 meters long, has fewer inclines and is wheelchair accessible, and there are several fantastic views of (almost) all of Herzberg.

Once at the top, go through the gatehouse (P) 60 meters into the

After leaving the gatehouse, take an old path to the left that leads to a staircase, so that after 200 meters you are at the “Schloßbahnhof”. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair-accessible alternative, so you have to return to the “Freudenstein” from where the street started At the Freudenstein leads directly to the "Schloßbahnhof"; that's a 600-meter detour. Castle train station is the slang term for the breakpoint Herzberg Castle (P) at the West Harz route. From here the Off-a-road (P) for Osteroder Strasse (B 243). If you cross this (again), you end up at the beginning of the Main road. The one inaugurated in 2005 is also located here 5 Herzberger water wheel (P) instead of the former lower mill that pumped water up to the castle.

If you go the Main road up, which is a pure pedestrian zone, you can end the hike with a stroll. The first ice cream parlor is already at the beginning. There are many shops in the center and there are plenty of parking spaces all around, all of which are free and mostly unlimited.

At the end of the day you could go to the market square, i.e. at the starting point, in one of the (ice cream) cafés on old town hall let it fade away.

Herzberger Wasseracht

Another way to explore the place is that Herzberger Wasseracht. It is a signposted walking path that offers interesting facts about the waters in the city in many places, but by far does not open up all the sights. You can also see him on town hall start. It leads once around the Yeah, at the Mühlengraben along, to Ochsenpfuhl, again along the Mühlengraben into the Pfingstanger, along the Sieber through the Domeyer Park („Avenue of Sighs"), at the Domeyerstadion and along the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium to the Lonauer waterfall (also Lonau waterfall), the only natural waterfall in the western Harz, which is particularly worth seeing after the snow has melted (→ More information in Wikipedia), to the paper factory and back at the Mühlengraben to the town hall. The water night can be started and ended at any point and can be walked in both directions. At the tourist information in old town hall there is a notice board.course at OpenStreetMap
