Sankt Andreasberg - Sankt Andreasberg

Sankt Andreasberg

St. Andreasberg is the highest mountain town in resinwhich is popular with hikers in summer due to its species-rich mountain meadows and its mostly snow-sure location with winter sports enthusiasts in the cold season. Politically, it has been part of the city since 2011 Braunlage.

background

Sankt Andreasberg is an ideal starting point to explore the nature of the Harz National Park to explore. The mining town with centuries-old mining tradition from which the mines Samson and Red bear Still preserved today as show mines, it is a summer destination for hikers, mountain bikers and, as a climatic health resort, also a destination for holidaymakers looking for relaxation. In winter, the uniquely high location - Sankt Andreasberg is the highest of the mountain towns in the Harz - (mostly) an extended season with guaranteed snow for cross-country skiing on the many trails in and around the village, for alpine skiing on Matthias-Schmidt-Berg and for long-term tobogganing fun. And in summer, too, the chair lift runs on the ski slope to make it easier for toboggan fans to descend on the summer toboggan run.

history

Mouth hole of the pit Red bear

The earliest roots of Sankt Andreasberg can be traced back to 1521, when the first mountain freedom was issued. From then on, silver mining was practiced in Sankt Andreasberg for almost four centuries. The first pits were the pit St. Andrew at the market square and the pit St. Andrew's Cross at the Beerberg. With the arrival of miners from the Mansfeld country, by the granting of city rights to the place and the growth of the pits to over 100, the place continued to grow steadily. At its peak, the place had 2,500 inhabitants.

Even if the silver yield in Sankt Andreasberg was not particularly large compared to the yields of neighboring mining towns, mining was able to last for a long time. It wasn't until 1920 that the mine closed Samson the last mining pit in the place.

As a relic of the Erzgebirge and Bohemian mining tradition that came with the miners in the village, a special Upper Harz dialect has been preserved among a few older residents in the village, which is strongly influenced by the Ore Mountains and was only spoken in the Upper Harz mining towns.

The shortest route from Herzberg to St. Andreasberg leads via the L521 through the idyllic Siebertal, at the end of which the road climbs sharply over a serpentine route. Alternatively, you can drive to Bad Lauterberg and via the L520 via Silberhütte to St. Andreasberg. In winter road conditions, this is the better drivable route.

In winter, the place can sometimes only be reached with snow chains, for this you should pay attention to the possible warnings about the weather and traffic situation in the Harz in the road traffic reports of the regional radio stations or on the Internet.

On foot

The Boulder bypass of Harz Hexenstieg leads through Sankt Andreasberg, furthermore the Harz-Eichsfeld-Thuringian Forest Path of Hörschel to Thale.

mobility

Map of Sankt Andreasberg

Due to its small size, the town center can be explored on foot; it is only practical to go to Matthias-Schmidt-Berg and the Silberhütte district if you are traveling by car or by bike. In St. Andreasberg, however, the name Bergstadt says it all - even shorter routes often have steeper gradients due to the location.

Wheelchair-grey3.png For people who use a rollator or wheelchair, the often steep nature of the footpaths in built-up areas can be problematic because of the upward force required and the downward braking power required. In snowy winters, you have to expect poorly cleared footpaths. Many footpaths are also narrow, so that you have to switch to the street from time to time. An accompanying person may therefore be necessary to provide support.
