Map of Thale

background

Thale lies in an impressive landscape at the foot of the Harz Mountains on both sides of the Bode, which rise directly from the foreland on its northern edge with a height difference of several hundred meters. The city with today almost 20,000 inhabitants (with incorporations) benefited from its location on the Bode, which comes out of the Harz with a steep slope in a canyon-like deep valley. It has been able to supply ironworks with energy since the Middle Ages and gave the city a landscape that had been discovered since the Romantic era. Thale has been a much-visited resort and industrial city since the 19th century. Before the First World War, the ironworks were the world's largest producer of enamel goods.

As a result of incorporations, the towns of Allrode, Altenbrak, Friedrichsbrunn, Neinstedt, Stecklenberg, Treseburg, Warnstedt, Weddersleben and Westerhausen, which are partly in the Harz Mountains and partly in the foreland, are administratively part of Thale.

Tourist Attractions

View from Hexentanzplaz into the rugged Bodetal. The free-standing cliff opposite is the Roßtrappe. In the middle of the horizon is the high Harz mountains Chunks to recognize.

The spectacular natural beauties of Thales include the rocky outcrops of the Rosstrappe and the Hexentanzplatz on both sides of the Bodetal. Both are equally visitor magnets and overrun on nice weekend days. Both can be reached from Thale by cable car or chairlift, on foot and, with a detour, by car.

1  Hexentanzplatz. Rock plateau with a view of the Bodetal and far into the Harz foreland. According to legend, one of the witches' meeting points on the way to Blocksberg. Today a meeting point for a less sophisticated mass tourism. The look is still good for something.Open: 24/7.Price: freely accessible (the place is free, not necessarily getting there.

  • You can arrive with: 3  Hexentanzplatz gondola lift, Goetheweg 1, 06502 Thale (valley station). Tel.: 49-(0)3947-2500, Fax: 49-(0)3947-2645, Email: . A wonderful view of the rugged, rocky Bode valley from the cabins of the railways. 10 of the 21 cabins of the brand new gondola lift even have a glass floor.Open: Easter to the end of October 09300 to 1900, shortened or completely closed in winter.Price: € 5 one way, € 7 return.
  • Arrival by car directly on the plateau: The Hexentanzplatz can also be approached directly by car from above. The approach is via the bumpy Thale - Friedrichsbrunn road. For those arriving from the south (= Harz) over the plateau of the Eastern Harz, this approach is ideal. Above is the paid one 4 Large car park Hexentanzplatz, which generally has quite high fees for tourist parking, but above all very high hourly parking fees for a short time: Tariff for a car as of May 2018: "Basic parking fee" € 3.50 € 0.50 per half hour or part thereof. Escape within the first 15 minutes is free of charge. From the parking lot, depending on the parking space, you walk past the hotel for about 400 to 500 m to the viewing gallery.
  • Hike to the Hexentanzplatz - A hike over the Hexenstieg to the Hexentanzplatz is also recommended. The ascent takes about 1.5 hours. Sweaty, free and rewarding. The view is a nice reward for the effort.

In addition to excursion restaurants, there is also a zoo, a summer toboggan run and the Harz mountain theater open-air stage on the plateau (see activities).

  • 1  Hexentanzplatz zoo. Open: all year round from 10 a.m. and until, depending on the season, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.Price: 7 €.

Roßtrappe with chairlift

2  Rosstrappe. The rock is the northern counterpart to the more famous Hexentanzplatz. From here you also have a beautiful view of the Bodetal, the Harz foreland with the Thale and of course over to the Hexentanzplatz.Open: 24/7.Price: freely accessible (the place is free, not necessarily getting there.

Hoofprint on the rosette
  • Hoofprint: According to a legend, the beautiful king's daughter Brunhilde was on the run from the giant Bodo, who wanted to marry her against her will. She fled on a white steed. Suddenly a deep abyss opened up in front of her. She jumped to the opposite rock, losing her crown and leaving the hoof print in the rock. Her pursuer fell and was turned into a dog guarding the princess' crown. The river was then named Bode, after the giant Bodo. According to another theory, the supposed hoof print is the remains of a Germanic sacrificial basin.

The journey can take place with

  • 5  Rosstrappe chairlift, Goetheweg 06502 Thale (valley station). Tel.: 49-(0)3947-2500, Fax: 49-(0)3947-2645, Email: . Open: Easter to the end of October 09300 to 1900, shortened or completely closed in winter.Price: 3.50 one way, 4.50 € return.
  • Car - via the country road to Treseburg. Payable 6 Rosstrappe car park.
Closed hiking trail "Schurre"
  • Hike The direct hiking trail from the Bodetal "vertical" up to the Rosstrappe via the "Schurre" hiking trail is not accessible. The route connects the Roßtrappe with the valley floor of the Bode. Unfortunately, this also interrupts the rear alpine mountain hiking connection from the Hexentanzplatz via Bodetal to the Roßtrappe. The way is due to Risk of falling rocks blocked since 2010 [1]. The reopening of the chute is unclear. There are probably considerations to set up a bypass parallel to the path point at risk of falling rocks. [2] When the path will be accessible again is as of September 2018[outdated] not known. Alternatively, there is a hiking trail ("Presidential Trail") that begins near the valley station and roughly follows the course of the country road (but not parallel to it).

  • The Bodetal
    Bodetal

A hiking trail along the begins below the valley station of the cable car to Hexentanzplatz Bode into the Bodetal. The places here prove to be lucrative hiking destinations Treseburg and Altenbrak. Since the path partly leads over sharp cliffs, sturdy shoes are strongly recommended. On the way through this sometimes very narrow and even in summer dark gorge you will be rewarded with unique views of the river and the surrounding rock formations. Those who make it to Treseburg could, for example, choose the way back towards Hexentanzplatz via the Weißer Hirsch viewpoint past the animal enclosure and then either take the cable car down to the valley or go down on foot. To do this, in Treseburg you first walk a few hundred meters along the road in the direction of Allrode and then keep left. In a wide arc you finally come to the Weißer Hirsch and enjoy another view from above of Treseburg at the confluence of the Luppbode and Bode rivers.
