Halberstadt is a city in Saxony-Anhalt. It is located on the Holtemme in the northern Harz foreland and borders in the east on the Magdeburg Börde.

background

Charlemagne made Halberstadt a bishopric, which it remained until the Thirty Years' War. That is why Halberstadt has other splendidly furnished churches in addition to the cathedral. The Halberstadt Cathedral Treasure is one of the most valuable legacies of the Middle Ages in Germany. Later attached to Prussia, Halberstadt became a flourishing industrial city with numerous valuable buildings.

Even in the last days of the Second World War, Halberstadt was badly destroyed by an air raid. This destruction and the subsequent neglect of old buildings in the GDR have massively changed the cityscape and not always to the advantage of the city. At least the Domplatz with cathedral and Church of Our Lady gives an impression of the original beauty of the cityscape.

trips

  • Huy: The Huy (pronounced: Hüh) is an elongated, approx. 12 km long and up to 3 km wide ridge in the northern Harz foreland in the Harz district, about 8 km north of Halberstadt.

You can reach the Huy by car either on the country road in the direction of Dingelstedt or on the federal road B79 in the direction of Wolfenbüttel to Athenstedt and then turn right towards Huy-Neinstedt or. Badersleben.

The Huy extends from east to west between the places Schwanebeck and Dardesheim. Its highest point is the Buchenberg at 314 m above sea level. Beech trees grow mainly in the Huy. There are not only interesting hiking trails there, but also many places worth seeing, such as the Huysburg, Röderhof, Huy-Neinstedt, Monk shark and Wilhelmshall. Im Huy bei Wilhelmshall mining (potash) was carried out decades ago. On the southern slope above the village Sargstedt you have a wonderful view from the Sargstedter Warte on the area around Halberstadt and the resin.

The Huy can also offer something special geologically: the so-called glacier pots are witnesses of the last ice age. The glacier pots can be found between Huy-Neinstedt and Athenstedt.Near the place Röderhof there is an artificially dammed pond, the Röderhofer pond. In the past, many orchards were planted on the north and south slopes of the Huy, which are ideal for hiking at any time of the year, especially between the Röderhofer pond and Dingelstedt.
