background

Aschersleben goes back to the 8th century and is therefore the oldest town in today's Saxony-Anhalt. After the latinized name of the city, Asharia headed the mighty royal house of Ascanians, which ruled large parts of northeast Germany in the Middle Ages, took its name. Aschersleben itself lost it to the Archbishop of Halberstadt at the beginning of the 14th century and the citizens of Aschersleben did not want to go back either. They had extensive autonomy ("you can live well under the crook") and the conveniently located city developed into a rich trading city.

Aschersleben was only slightly destroyed in World War II and has therefore been able to preserve its old townscape. In the GDR era, it was more of a curse than a blessing, the city was badly run down, today Aschersleben, with its largely undamaged city center and a largely preserved city wall, is an undiscovered pearl for tourists.
