Station concourse

The Göttingen train station is an important transport hub for the southern Lower Saxony region and the connection of the University of Göttingen and the companies in the region to long-distance transport. At the same time, for many travelers it is a transfer station between the north-south and east-west long-distance connections of Deutsche Bahn. ICEs stop here almost every hour in the direction Frankfurt (Main) and Stuttgart, Munich, Hamburg or Berlin.

The building and the access area to the tracks have been extensively renovated and expanded in recent years. This was honored with the election of the station of the year 2013.

Locomotive hall

The main entrance is on the side of the train station facing the city center, accessible from Berliner Straße. Pedestrians from the city center come via Goetheallee. The entrance is also called the east entrance. The west exit (rear exit) is the entrance directly adjacent to the long-distance tracks. From here you can reach the multi-storey car park and the Lokhalle event center.

The former locomotive repair hall from 1917, which is no longer connected to the track system today, was converted into an event center with a multiplex cinema in the 1990s. The building is also worth seeing from the outside, so that it is a good destination for a short walk if you are waiting.

The station has 2 platforms, where mainly regional trains stop (4/5 and 6/7), also on track 8 mainly regional trains stop. Long-distance tracks 9 and 10 are primarily reserved for ICE trains; trains run from track 9 to the north (Hamburg) and northeast (Berlin). Trains go west (Frankfurt) and south (Munich, Stuttgart, Interlaken, etc.) from platform 10.

history

When the first railway lines were laid in the Kingdom of Hanover from 1842 - the first between Hanover and Braunschweig - Today's southern Lower Saxony was disconnected for the time being, a connection here was not considered. However, due to the commitment of the then City Syndic Oesterley, the application for a station building and a route to Göttingen was submitted in 1851. Construction began in 1852, and on July 3, 1854 the station at the Hanover Southern Railway with one out Alfeld (leash) coming train opened. The building from then has been largely preserved to this day, there was a single platform. At that time, the railroad tracks were still at ground level. In 1897 the Göttingen narrow-gauge small railway became, too Gartetalbahn called the ins Eichsfeld led, connected in front of the station building.

From 1910 to the 1920s, the station was rebuilt for the first time, the tracks were now raised to avoid crossing traffic with the adjacent streets. In the course of this renovation, the connection to the Gartetalbahn was relocated; it was now a few 100 m south on the Leine.
