At that time the population stayed away from the heights, as the legend went around that supposedly the devil should live there ("devil's hole"). After the cow broke in, farmers therefore had to work hard to close the cavity with basalt blocks. It was not until 1830 that the cave was inspected. Between 1905 and 1908, an access was finally carved into the mountain and the cave expanded. In 1927 the show cave with electric lighting went into operation. In 2000 the attraction had 25,000 visitors. Today, an average of 16,000 day trippers and vacationers visit the cave every year.
