Schluechtern is a small town in Main-Kinzig district in Hesse. The city lies in the upper Kinzig valley between Vogelsberg, Spessart and Rhön.

Schlüchtern is a state-approved climatic health resort. Due to its location, the climate in Schlüchtern is significantly cooler than in the Rhine-Main area, for example. Schlüchtern still includes 12 formerly independent villages that were incorporated as part of the community reforms of the 1970s.
Schlüchtern can look back on a long history, for example there was a very important monastery here in the Middle Ages. Many buildings from this period have been preserved to this day. Schlüchtern was formerly a district town and still has a certain central function for the entire region, so that all business of daily life can be done in Schlüchtern.
The urban area of Schlüchtern with the surrounding mountain ranges is also known as the "Bergwinkel". The region is extremely rural and very hilly to mountainous. Hikers get their money's worth here. However, the infrastructure in this area is few and far between, and shopping and overnight stays need to be well planned.

is located on the busy Fulda - Frankfurt am Main railway line. The regional express Frankfurt am Main - Fulda stops in Schlüchtern every hour. The regional express consists of the well-known red double-decker coaches, which have a comfortable compartment for wheelchair users, bicycles and prams.

There is also a regional train from Würzburg-Schlüchtern on the old north-south route. It runs every two hours on weekends, only during the week irregular, i.a. with shutdown at lunchtime. Würzburg Hbf is also a long-distance stop, so that the train can be more worthwhile for travelers from Bavaria than the detour via Frankfurt or Fulda.
The Schlüchtern train station is located above the village, from here it only goes downhill, so the path is easy to manage on foot. Of course, you can also use a connecting bus, provided you already have an RMV ticket and the time is right. However, it is not worth buying a separate ticket for two stops.

By bicycle
The runs through Schlüchtern Hess. Long-distance cycle route R3: Rhine - Main - Kinzig of Rudesheim am Rhein in the Rheingau to Fir in the Rhön (Near Fulda). Since you drive through the Kinzig valley, cyclists in the direction of Hanau do not expect any major inclines. In the direction of Fulda you have to cross the ridge (Rhine / Weser watershed).

Local public transport in Schlüchtern and in the entire Bergwinkel region is operated by the Fulda municipal utility. There is a ring traffic Schlüchtern - Elm - Vollmerz - Gundhelm - Hutten - Elm - Schlüchtern, on this route two lines (MKK-92 and MKK-93) run exactly in opposite directions, so that a total of Mon-Fri every hour, Sat and Sun every two hours results. The districts to the west (Wallroth, Kressenbach, Breitenbach) are almost inaccessible by public transport.

In addition to the history of Schlüchtern, various works of art by local artists are shown on four floors. - 4 Brandenstein Castle. Tel.: (0)6661 3888. Brandenstein Castle is a hilltop castle above the village of Elm near Schlüchtern. The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century. The castle has been completely preserved to this day, apart from a few renovations. There are two exhibitions in the castle: The Japanese Siebold Collection and the Wooden Equipment Museum. The exhibitions can only be visited as part of a guided tour by appointment. This is also possible in combination with a guided tour of the castle (dates also by arrangement). To the Open Monument Day the castle and the two museums are also accessible without prior notice.

Numerous circular routes open up the area around the city center and parts of the city. A hiking map with all marked trails is in the City Tourist Office available (1.70 € nominal fee).
Schlüchtern is located on several long-distance hiking trails as well as local hiking trails. The central starting point are the two hiking trail signs at the "Napoleonstürmchen" (monastery wall) opposite the Untertor car park.
- BUND-Schlüchtern circular route: The very varied surroundings of the city between Rhön, Spessart and Vogelsberg are opened up over a distance of 46 km. Seven "spokes" lead from the city center to the surrounding main path, so that there are seven round tours of 10-18 km in length.
- Donkey path (111km): From Schlüchtern over the Spessart to Miltenberg am Main.
- Spessart Arch (92 km): From Schlüchtern over the heights of the Spessart on the Kinzig valley side to Langenselbold (92 km).

- Steinau an der Straße (about 5 km southwest) with the Brothers Grimm house, in which the Brothers Grimm grew up. Nice old town with puppet theater and the castle. The Steinau adventure park and the only stalactite cave in Hesse are also worth seeing.
