Verden (All) is the district town of the district of Verden in the state Lower Saxony. In the northwest the Aller flows into the Weser. Even if the word "Verden" is not derived from horses, but from Ferdi in Saxonia, and refers to ford or ferry, the self-proclaimed "equestrian town" is the center of the German horse industry (breeding, trade and sport).

Tourist Attractions

Restored half-timbered house with origins in the 17th century
  • Old town - The old town stretches along the Aller between the town hall and the cathedral. That is between the cathedral and the Aller Fishing district, where most of the well-preserved historical buildings can be found. The John Lennon Memorial, erected in 2008, is also located here.
  • Verden Cathedral - The Gothic cathedral is the symbol of the city. It was built in two phases, the first from 1290-1323, the second from 1473-1490. In a wall in the inner courtyard you can also find the "Stone Man", around which several legends are entwined.
  • St. Johannis in Verden - The St. Johannis Church is one of the oldest brick buildings in Northern Germany. The construction of the stone church began in the middle of the 12th century. Initially, the building was a single-nave Romanesque church with the tower at the end in the west and a choir room in the east. Many Romanesque style elements have been preserved to this day.

Museums

  • Canon House. The canon house, a stately courtyard from 1708, is only a few minutes' walk from the cathedral and houses the cultural and folkloric collections of the Verden city history.
  • German Horse Museum. The connection between man and horse has centuries of tradition in Verden and the surrounding area. This is documented by the German Horse Museum. The focus of the collection is riding and driving equipment from different eras and cultures, models and smaller pewter figure dioramas, bronze sculptures and porcelain figures, illustrated books, graphics and paintings. It also offers two riding simulations.

activities

  • Journeys in historical trains on the Verden-Walsroder Railway between Verden and Stemmen
  • Verden has a permanent acting troupe who All stage, whose comedy productions are performed in the country hotel "Zur Linde" (Thedinghauser Str. 16), often together with a dinner. Pre-sale tickets e.g. at the Verdener Aller-Zeitung (Große Straße 1).

shop

The "Große Straße", which stretches from Johanniswall to the cathedral, is Verden's shopping street and offers branches of some well-known retail groups and chains, various small shops, cafes and restaurants.

kitchen

  • Sotti's Bistro, Lugenstein 2. Small, cozy bistro with typical bistro cuisine at very affordable prices, right by the cathedral.
  • Pades restaurant, Green Street 15. Regionally very well-known restaurant, accordingly fully booked well in advance. Upper price range.
  • Portofino Verden, Grosse Str. 126. The modern bistro with a Mediterranean flair and green plants serves pizza and pasta dishes from Italy. Pleasant atmosphere.
  • La Piazza Verden, Grosse Str. 46. The unique place in the heart of Verden directly at the town hall, which combines café, bar and bistro.
  • Davide, Lindhooper Strasse 49. Italian restaurant / pizzeria, quite loud and full at the horse events, a mixed crowd. The Davide has cult status in Verden, so reservations should be made in good time. Medium price range, friendly service. Charming German skills of the staff.
  • Asia, Lindhooper Strasse 44. Typical Chinese kitsch, but good and relatively cheap food.
  • acropolis, Lindhooper Strasse 6. Solid Greek cuisine, child-friendly.

nightlife

At Lugenstein and around Anita-Augspurg-Platz is the so-called "Bermuda Triangle" (not to be confused with its alleged namesake, the Bochum pub district). This is where "Sotti's Bistro" is located (you should, however, like sports broadcasts), the cocktail bar "Variety" (perhaps the most delicious cocktails in town) and the bistro / pub "Vienna". In the fishing district (from the cathedral towards Aller) there is also the "Mais 12", somewhat hidden in the Nikolaistrasse the "Zü Palü". A little outside, at Siemensstrasse 14, is the "Dropstone dance hall" which, by Verden standards, comes closest to a disco.

In the town hall there are only irregular events, in the youth center "Dampfmühle" (one of the oldest in Germany) unfortunately even less, although at the few concerts in the year scene-relevant punk bands play.

accommodation

  • Uhlemühlen riding stables, 3 km northwest of the city center. No food or drinks in the evening. Medium price range
  • Hotel mask, Nienburger Str. 22, directly on the B 215 towards Nienburg.
