Stolberg is a district of the municipality of Südharz in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt. The place is nicknamed Thomas Müntzer City and Historic Europe city. The former goes back to the theologian and reformer who was born here in 1468, the latter has been borne by the city since 1993 due to its historical structure: half-timbered houses from four centuries stand here. The place is still a recognized climatic health resort.

background

In Stolberg you feel transported back into the Middle Ages, as the entire cityscape is characterized by old half-timbered houses from the 15th to 18th centuries. These are completely surrounded by forests in some narrow valleys of the southern Harz. Because of its old building fabric, Stolberg was given the title “historic European city” in 1993. The city is less suitable for shopping and going out, it is more for those looking for relaxation and nature lovers with the ambition to travel back in time.

The place emerged around the year 1000 as a miners' settlement, although mining has been detectable in the area since 796. Iron, copper, silver, tin and gold have been mined here since ancient times. In the 13th century Stolberg was granted city rights. The current city was soon the residence of the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode. Juliana zu Stolberg-Wernigerode was born in their castle in 1506. Her first marriage was to Count Philipp II of Hanau-Munzenberg, who died in 1529, and her second marriage to the widowed Count Wilhelm "Der Reiche" von Nassau-Dillenburg from 1531 Willem-Alexander presently the king of Netherlands represents. The reason is the eldest son from his second marriage, William of Orange (1533-1584), who, as William I of Orange-Nassau, liberated the Netherlands from Spanish rule.

Under the peasant leader Thomas Müntzer, who was born here, Stolberg was the site of several battles during the German Peasants' War. On May 2, 1525, insurgent peasants invaded the city and forced the count to accept their demands (24 Stolberg articles), which, however, quickly reversed them after the peasants' defeat.

Coins had been minted in the city since the 12th century, and the handicrafts had their heyday in the 16th century. Mining, on the other hand, was stopped from the 17th century. In 1815 the city became part of Prussia, and in 1833 Stolberg already had 2,392 inhabitants. At the beginning of the 20th century, Stolberg became a tourist resort, in 1923 a railway to Berga-Kelbra was opened, and since 1946 the town has been a health resort.

trips

  • Large Auerberg with observation tower Josephskreuz - Not far from Stolberg (approx. 5 km away) rises the Große Auerberg (579 m). The 38 meter high observation tower with the name Josephskreuz is located on top of it. Originally made of wood according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1880. In 1896 the tower was rebuilt as an iron structure, in keeping with the industrial revolution. The Joseph Cross weighs 123 tons and is held together by around 100,000 rivets. The ideal is to go from Stolberg along the Song Street to hike (singing is optional). The tower is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until dark (admission). In the event of thunderstorms, storms, icing, heavy fog, rain or snowfall, the cross remains closed for safety reasons.
