History

antiquity

The area around Bad Wimpfen was already around 450 BC. Settled by the Celts. This was favored by the fertile landscape. Another reason was an old trade route that crossed the Neckar here. The area was also settled in Roman times around 85 AD. There is evidence of a bridge over the Neckar at Wimpfen in the valley; a fort opposite the mouth of the Jagst was probably used for military security. On the other side of the river, the first ran Neckar-Odenwald-Limes. When this border line was moved to the east, there was probably a flourishing settlement in Wimpfen in the valley, as is proven by numerous finds of Roman statues, also under the name Wimpfen heaven of gods known. After the end of Roman rule around 260 AD. then began the disintegration of the Roman buildings.

middle Ages

With the Frankish rule came Christianity, there are references to early Christian churches. The region around Wimpfen belonged to the dominion of the Franconian kings. Wimpfen was first mentioned in documents in 829 as a property of the bishops of Worms. A few years later the city was destroyed by Attila's Huns. After the reconstruction of the city and the collegiate church St. Peter Wimpfen received market rights from Emperor Otto I in 965; the Valley market has been preserved to this day.

The place Wimpfen am Berg only developed at the time of Staufer. In 1182 the imperial palace was founded by Emperor Barbarossa on the ridge, and the Domininican monastery was built in the immediate vicinity. The collegiate church was also redesigned: while the entrance area was still designed in the Romanesque style, the nave and the choir were built in the Gothic style.

After the end of the Staufer period in 1250, Wimpfen was able to expand its independence and the city became an imperial city, as the imperial eagle in the coat of arms still attests to today. In 1487 the city received from Emperor Friedrich III. the right to hold a Katharinenmarkt. This custom has also survived to this day, only the name has changed. The Katharinenmarkt on November 25th became the Christmas market.

Modern times

The Thirty Years War was a negative turning point in the development of the city. Already in 1622 it came to Battle of Wimpfen, and in the period that followed there were repeated looting and epidemics. The few surviving residents used the vacant buildings as a quarry for reconstruction. In this time of need, Wimpfen received support from Nuremberg, which was to thank Nuremberg towers built.

In 1803 Wimpfen lost its status as a Imperial city, the city was added to the Principality of Hesse. Wimpfen also includes the Wimpfen forest, an in-between Bad Rappenau- Upper lashes and Neckarbischofsheim-Helmhof forest area.

In the neighboring village Offenau on the right bank of the Neckar was the salt works in 1754 Clemenshall founded. After in nearby Württemberg Jagstfeld Successful drilling for salt in 1812 was accomplished in Wimpfen in 1817 and in the neighboring one in 1822 Rappenau. With the development of the salt warehouse and the founding of the Ludwigshalle saltworks in 1817, the city's importance increased again. The spa hotel Mathildenbad was founded in 1835; Wimpfen has been allowed to use the title “Bad” in its city name since 1930. The place has belonged to Baden-Württemberg since 1952.

Stauferpfalz

In the period from 1150 to around 1220, the former Staufer Palatinate was built on a mountain spur with a length of 215 m and a maximum width of 88 m. It was surrounded by a wall that has largely been preserved. The still-preserved Staufer buildings form the core of the striking city skyline. After the end of the Hohenstaufen rule this became Castle District integrated into the medieval city.

Wimpfen in the valley

Details collegiate church
Knight's Collegiate Church of St. Peter

The oldest traces of settlement were found in the Wimpfen district in the valley; a Roman troop camp was located here, it probably served to protect a wooden bridge over the Neckar. Wall remains of Roman buildings are partially hidden under the modern buildings. The district was once completely surrounded by a wall; it is largely intact along the banks of the Neckar.

  • 9  Former Knight's Monastery of St. Peter. Ehemaliges Ritterstift St. Peter in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaEhemaliges Ritterstift St. Peter (Q1674243) in der Datenbank Wikidata. An impressive structure. In the buildings of the former monastery, the Maltese have set up a spiritual center in the rooms of the Monastery Meetings take place on a regular basis, and overnight accommodation is available in the monastery and guest house.
Details collegiate church
West facade of the collegiate church
A first church was built at this point around 620 on the remains of Roman buildings. It was probably found during the Hungarian invasions around 950 AD. destroyed. The Worms bishops had the church rebuilt in Romanesque style around 965. A gray limestone was used as the building material, as can still be seen today in the west facade. From 1269 the church was gradually renovated in the Gothic style, sandstone was now used as building material. The choir and the transept were completed in 1274 in the early Gothic style. Central nave and side aisles followed in a further phase, they are not in a straight line to the choir. It is believed that the Romanesque west facade was preserved for financial reasons, but was not connected to the new Gothic building until the 14th century.
To the north and west of St. Peter's Church there are other buildings of the former knight's monastery, some of which date from the Baroque era and are now used as conference rooms and guest houses. The building complex only became a monastery in the true sense of the word after the Second World War, when the Benedictines, expelled from Grüssau in Silesia, found a new home here by 2006; then it came into the care of the Maltese.

  • Pulpit and figure of Peter in the nave
