background

Gundelsheim, remains of the city wall

Gundelsheim is located on the Neckar, today comprises 5 districts as well as some hamlets and residential areas.

It was mentioned in a document as early as 776 in the Lorsch Codex. Horneck Castle was built in the 12th century, the place soon came into the possession of the Teutonic Order and was also the residence of the Deutschmeister for a short time. Around 1400 Gundelsheim received city rights and was protected by walls and towers. However, this could not prevent the city from suffering from both the Peasants 'War and the Thirty Years' War, nor was it spared the plague. In 1805 Gundelsheim came to Württemberg.

The Neckar, on which the chain tugs have been driving from Mannheim to Heilbronn since 1878, was made usable for large shipping from 1935. The Gundelsheim Neckar lock was also built at that time. In 1938 Böttingen was incorporated. In the years 1971 to 1975 the municipalities of the so-called crooked plane Bachenau, Höchstberg, Obergriesheim and Tiefenbach districts of Gundelsheim. It also includes the hamlets of Dornbach and Bernbrunn. The Michaelsberg and the Horneck Castle count to the residential places.

Michaelsberg

Chapel on the Michaelsberg

2 Michaelsberg The Michaelsberg is a striking plateau and lies between Gundelsheim and the district of Böttingen. The Michael's Chapel is at its highest point. It was probably built on an ancient place of worship, at least a Roman altar stone in a wall niche indicates this. The originally Romanesque building was rebuilt and expanded in the Gothic style. Today the chapel stands in the middle of the small Böttinger cemetery and is usually closed during the day.

The southern and western slopes of Michaelsberg serve as vineyards. The dry stone walls of the terraces are partially protected. The ascent to Michaelsberg is possible from Gundelsheim on a steep path with numerous steps, from Böttingen paved paths go to the Michaelsberg residential area, the agricultural property runs a farm shop and is also a popular holiday farm.
