Neckarsulm is a city in Heilbronn district in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

background

Map of Neckarsulm

When it was first mentioned in a document in 771, the place was Villa Sulmana called; the name refers to the location on the lower reaches of the Sulm not far from where it flows into the Neckar. The place Sulm was initially owned by the Hohenstaufen family and received city rights around 1300. Later, the Archbishopric of Mainz bought the city of Sulm. In 1484 the German Order of Knights took over the rule until it, now already with the name Neckarsulm, Came to Württemberg in 1806. Therefore correct pronunciation: Neckar-Sulm. With the pronunciation "Neckars-ulm" one shows that one is a stranger to the place.

From 1953 Neckarsulm has with the newly founded Amorbach another district. Since the regional reform in 1971, Obereisesheim and Dahenfeld have also been part of it.

Until the end of the 19th century, the city was characterized by agriculture and viticulture. The city experienced an economic boom through industrialization. the Company NSU (the brand name is derived from the place name NeckarSUlm) - originally a knitting machine factory, which from the 1880s became known as a pioneer in bicycle, motorcycle and automobile production and that in 1969 with the Ingolstadt-based company Auto Union to today's well-known automaker Audi merged. After Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm is still the second large production site of Audi AG in Germany, which is the largest employer in the city with over 16,000 employees. Another important industrial company in Neckarsulm is the automotive supplier Kolbenschmidt (one of the world's leading manufacturers of pistons for car engines), today a brand of Rheinmetall Automotive AG. Slowly, however, the focus is shifting towards trade and services through the headquarters of the company groups Lidl and Kaufland and the IT service providers Bechtle and TDS.

The next major city is the neighboring city Heilbronn. The other neighboring communities all belong to the Heilbronner Land: Untereisesheim and Bad friedrichshall lie in Neckar Valley, Oedheim and Neuenstadt am Kocher belong to Kochertal, Eberstadt and Erlenbach are east of the Neckar and south of the Kocher.

Churches

The baroque Catholic one is considered to be one of Neckarsulm's landmarks 1 City parish church of St. Dionysius, which was built on a rock spur between 1706 and 1710 and is therefore visible from afar. It was not until 1757 that the nearly 50 meter high church tower followed the rest of the church. The church suffered a sad fate in the last months of the Second World War: it was the victim of the bomb attack on Neckarsulm on March 1, 1945 and burned down completely on that day. One month later, on April 2, 1945, the city was already on the frontline and the remains of the church building were further damaged by fighter-bombers and artillery shells. It is thanks to the foresight of the then Neckarsulm city pastor Joseph Sandel and the master carpenter August Saup that parts of the valuable interior of the church survived the war time unscathed: with the support of several Neckarsulm citizens, equipment such as the high altar was moved to other chapels, to Schloss Stein at the Kocher and in the salt mine in Bad Friedrichshall so that they could be kept protected from the war. Immediately after the end of the war, the tidying up of the church began, from 1946 to 1949 it was rebuilt in the old style.

The Catholic 2 woman Church, whose real name Church of Our Lady on the Steinach is a small church in the northern Neckarsulm city center, which emerged from the early mass chapel of the parish church of St. Dionysius. Some early Gothic parts of the church probably date from the 12th to 14th centuries. In the 18th century it became the destination of numerous pilgrims, most of whom came from the areas on the Rhine and Moselle. The sandstone sculptures in the little garden of the church also date from this time. Behind the church is Neckarsulm's Old Cemetery, where there are many historical graves.

Inconspicuous in the Klostergasse The one, which was completed in 1664, is hidden away 3 Monastery church of the former Neckarsulm Capuchin monastery. The former monastery had an inner courtyard with a cloister and existed until 1811. The monastery buildings were then used as a prison for the Württemberg Oberamt Neckarsulm and the church itself as the town's junk shop. The church has been used as a church again since 1894; the Neckarsulms police station is now located in the rest of the monastery buildings. The seated part is considered to be a particularly valuable part of the interior of the church Madonna from Scheuerbergwhich probably comes from the destroyed castle on the mountain of the same name.

With the 4 City Church there has been a Protestant church in Neckarsulm, which is predominantly Catholic, since 1888. It was built from local sandstone in the neo-Gothic style. The adjacent rectory was built in 1893. A memorable incident occurred on the night of June 30th to July 1st, 1897, when a severe storm demolished the spire and part of the belfry and badly damaged the rectory.

View from the Dahenfeld town hall to the St. Remigius Church.

In the Dahenfeld district is the 5 St. Remigius Church worth seeing. During the evening prayer on August 10, 1753, according to the pastor of Dahenfeld and the believers present, blood and sweat should have come out of the Jesus figure on the crucifix in the church. This incident was repeated a year later. The events made a name for themselves and Dahenfeld developed into a popular pilgrimage destination, on a few days over a thousand pilgrims visited the Dahenfeld church. Some of them reported that the pilgrimage helped them in their need.

The evangelical 6 Mauritius Church with the parsonage belonging to it is a simple church building in the Obereisesheim district, some of whose origins date back to the 11th century.
