Reutlingen is a city in Baden-Wuerttemberg at the foot of the Middle Swabian Alb.
background
Reutlingen is located on the Echaz, a small tributary of the Neckar in the foreland of the Middle Swabian Alb. The place got market rights in 1180, between 1220 and 1240 it was fortified with walls and city gates. The Marienkirche was built between 1247 and 1343 and is now a landmark of the city. In 1343 Reutlingen was given an imperial city constitution. Most of it was destroyed in a city fire in 1726, and only a few buildings survived the catastrophe. In 1802 Reutlingen became part of Württemberg. An economic boom followed through the settlement of industries. After the first incorporations from 1907, further districts were added during the municipal reform in 1971-75, these are Altenburg, Betzingen, Bronnweiler, Degerschlacht, Gönningen, Mittelstadt, Oferdingen, Ohmenhausen, Reicheneck, Rommelsbach, Sickenhausen and Sondelfingen. As a result, the population rose to over 100,000. Reutlingen has therefore been able to call itself a major city since 1988.
