background

View over Bad Nauheim from the Johannisberg

Bad Nauheim is a very well-kept and quiet place, which is mainly set up to meet the needs of older spa guests. Parks and cafes invite you to take a walk and relax.

The history the place was determined by the salt production. The health resort has only been important for about 150 years.

  • 5th-1st century BC: Celtic salt boilers used the natural brine sources to extract salt on a scale that was almost industrial for the time, and thus achieved great wealth.
  • 3rd century AD: After the Romans withdrew, salt production was stopped and the facilities fell into disrepair.
  • 7th century: Resumption of salt production in the Franconian Empire.
  • 16th century: decline in salt production due to a lack of wood.
  • 1579: construction of the first simple Graduation buildings made of reed and straw mats. This reduced the consumption of wood as fuel for the enrichment of the salt in brine boilers.
  • 1736: The modern, large graduation works, as can be seen today in the spa gardens, are built. Another significant reduction in wood consumption.
  • 18th century: The salt pans were among the most modern and largest plants for salt production in Europe. There were 23 graduation buildings (5 today) with a length of 3700 m, as well as 7 water wheels and 2 windmills for the brine transport.
  • 1835: Opening of the first brine baths.
  • 1846: Successful drilling for large salt deposits, the "great hot spring". This meant that there was enough brine available for salt extraction and the operation of bathing establishments. Thus Nauheim also had a second economic mainstay.
  • 1854: Nauheim receives town charter. Establishment of a casino to finance the construction of the spa house and park.
  • 1857: The spa gardens are laid out in their current form
  • 1869: Nauheim is given the name "Bad"
  • 1905-1912: Establishment of the bathing and spa facilities (e.g. Sprudelhof, drinking spa facility) in Art Nouveau style as part of an overall urban planning concept.
  • 1959: The salt production was stopped for cost reasons. The remaining graduation towers are now used for inhalation therapy.

Today only 170m of it have been preserved as an industrial monument. From the graduation buildings 4/5, a signposted footpath leads from 10 to 15 minutes to the water wheel.
