Friedberg is a city in the Wetterau, In the state Hesse.

background

Friedberg is a cultural center of the Wetterau with many further education schools. The Adolfsturm, a 58 m high keep within the castle complex, is the city's landmark. In the Judengasse of the old town you will find the monumental underground ritual bath / mikveh, which is 25 m deep in Germany. 1958-1960 Elvis Presley was stationed in Friedberg. His work is recognized in the Wetterau Museum.

The campaigns of Germanicus required a Roman military camp, which was built on the Friedberger Burgberg at the beginning of the 1st century AD. After the end of the campaigns, the Romans withdrew. From 69-79 AD Vespasian again built a Roman fort on the castle hill, which was built around 260 AD when the Romans retreated to the Rhine border. was abandoned again. Today you can still find the excavated remnants of a small bathing complex. Tacitus mentioned the "castellum in monte tauno" (The fort in the Taunus Mountains), and probably meant the fort in today's Friedberg.

Between 1171–1180, Kuno I von Hagen-Münzenberg founded Friedberg, presumably on behalf of Emperor Barbarossa. According to the oldest surviving document, the castle dates from 1216. The castle and town of Friedberg are located on a basalt rock in the Wetterau. The city is mentioned in a document from 1219. Castle and town were legally independent units and later their own territories within the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation. The close proximity of the castle and town led to friction for centuries. A similar geographic situation in Nuremberg resulted in comparable problems. In Friedberg, cloth was produced with economic success. Friedberg became an imperial city as early as 1252. Two trade fairs were held here every year. The Friedberger cloth was in great demand and was delivered to Lübeck, Silesia, the Netherlands and Vienna.

In the 14th century the city had about 3000 inhabitants and was a medium-sized city. The Jewish community had existed since 1241 and had a few hundred members. The city burned in 1383 and 1447. The Frankfurt fair became more important than Friedberg. The result was an economic decline. The city had to go into debt. Since 1347, the empire pledged the imperial city of Friedberg several times to various noble lords. From 1455 it was in the pledge of Friedberg Castle. In 1483 the castle took control of the city. In 1497 there were only about 1300 inhabitants in Friedberg. Wealthy citizens had moved to Frankfurt am Main.

In 1541 the imperial city became Protestant. The city suffered from the Thirty Years 'War, the Seven Years' War, the French Revolutionary Wars and the looting. In 1802 the city fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. At that time it had about 2000 inhabitants. Castle and town were united in 1834. The construction of the Main-Weser Railway (1850–52) was the reason for a slow economic rise.
